“I hate crying. It makes me feel weak and helpless. I need to be strong.”
“You are a grown up, stop crying!”
“I don’t want anyone to know that I cried.”
How many times have you heard and said these lines? Many times, right.
They are just some of the few examples of how our society trains us to perceive crying.
Our society has painted this image of a superhero – who during the tough times, don’t shed a single tear but smile throughout. And, we all desire to be seen as that superhero.
We are so scared of the phenomenon of crying, that the moment we see anyone crying, the first two words that we utter are – “Stop Crying!”
But Why? Because we are made to believe that crying is a sign of weakness and helplessness. But, science completely denies it.
As per psychology, the people who often cry are mentally strong. And, here are 4 reasons to prove this:
1. Like All Mentally Strong People, They Are Strong At Accepting & Facing Their Emotions
Some moments in life might be really tough and make you feel sad, disappointed, angry and frustrated. Now, in order to be perceived strong, you may prefer to suppress your feelings and lock them inside you. Or, you might want to cry to face and accept them.
Suppressing emotions is a good short-term strategy but a very harmful in the long run. Also, it is much easier to suppress the feelings rather than face and accept them.
2. Like Mentally Strong People, They Are Worried About Society i.e. Log Kya Kahengey
Our society disapproves of crying for both men and women. If a man cries, our society labels him as a coward. When a woman cries, the label used is Drama Queen.
If you are still not scared of Log Kya Kahengey and bravely chose to cry to deal with your emotions, it shows a rare strand of courage and strength.
It’s because only if you’re strong, will you let your guard down without worrying too much about being judged by society.
3. Like Mentally Strong People, They Are Better Leaders
People who cry are more in touch with their emotions which help them understand others’ emotions better. This helps them in forming meaningful relationships, which is critical for being a leader. Additionally, not being fearful of what people think about them is also a sign of being a great leader.
4. Like Mentally Strong People, They Are Better At Managing Stress
We all know that the Mentally Strong people are better equipped at handling stress. But so are the people who cry.
Research shows that the tears remove some of the harmful chemicals that are built up in the body because of stress.
And, the people who suppress tears have increased stress levels, which contributes to diseases aggravated by stress, such as high blood pressure, heart problems, and peptic ulcers.
