While many of us were gearing up to celebrate women’s day, a 23-year-old pregnant woman committed suicide over alleged dowry harassment in Hunsur in Mysuru on Saturday evening.
If you are one of those desperate parents, who have sleepless nights because your daughter is unable to find a suitable groom, then you can not miss the story of this 23-year-old. This story will definitely make you reconsider your priorities. Should you worry more about your daughter’s marriage or her wellbeing & financial independence?
What Happened?
Revealing the ugly reality of how women are treated in our society, this to-be mom paid the price of being a woman in our patriarchal society.
As per the sources told ToI, on Friday, Lakshmi had called her parents and requested them to take her back to home as she couldn’t tolerate the harassment anymore. Her parents consoled her by saying they will come on Saturday and take her back. But on Saturday, parents received a call from their daughter’s in-laws informing them about the death.
What’s sadder is that the parents of the victim, even after being aware of the greedy nature of their daughter’s husband and in-laws got her married into this monstrous family.
As per sources, Laksmi married Yogesh from Mysore 10 months ago in an expensive wedding. The family paid cash of Rs 50 lakh, gifted gold ornaments weighing 400 grams and borne entire wedding expenses.
But, it wasn’t enough. As mentioned by Lakshmi’s parents, her in-laws and husband were pressurizing her to get additional dowry. They alleged that within two months of the wedding, her husband and in-laws started harassing her, forcing her to take an extreme step.
She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom on Sunday morning.
The police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC on the basis of a complaint lodged by the Lakshmi’s father B Basavanna. It is heartbreaking to see how, even in the 21st century, women are being harassed for dowry.
The Bottom Line
We believe the person seeking dowry is no different than a beggar, and if you think otherwise then you need to re-read this story. Please make sure your daughter doesn’t turn into the next Lakshmi.
While Lakshmi rests in peace, we hope she gets justice and courts send across a serious message to all the dowry seeking animals!
