It is heartbreaking how even in the 21st century, there are so many women who are still bearing the pain of dowry harassment. What is even more disgusting is the fact of how even educated men and well-to-do families expect women and their parents to give them dowry.
Recently, we shared a post on how a US-educated and successful Indian man shamelessly asked for dowry. This post was an ugly reminder of how this practice of dowry is even prevalent among educated and affluent families.
Recently, in Ghaziabad, another incident of a woman committing suicide with her two-year-old daughter shocked many.
As per TOI, on Saturday evening, a 26-year-old woman held her two-year-old daughter in her arms and jumped from the 4th-floor corridor outside their flat in Shalimar Garden. While her daughter died on the spot, the mother succumbed to her injuries in hospital after an hour.
The family has lodged a police complaint, accusing her husband, Amit, who is a constable with Delhi Police of pushing their daughter to death. They alleged that Amit had been harassing her for a few months over dowry. A resident of the housing society said he came to know about the incident from the security guards.
“I rushed to the tower where the couple lived and found the woman and her daughter lying face down. There was blood all over. We informed police and a team arrived in the society within 10 minutes,”
While sharing the details, Alok Dubey, the circle officer of Sahibabad area, said it was around 7 pm that Preeti jumped along with the little girl.
“The guards saw them first and informed her husband, Amit. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. The 2-year-old child was declared dead on arrival while her mother died during treatment after an hour.”
“At the time of the incident, her husband was inside the flat. We have received a complaint from the woman’s family. They have alleged that the husband killed her and their daughter over dowry.”
The brother of the victim, who is also a constable in Delhi Police, said the couple got married in 2018. While sharing the details of how the ties between them soured recently over dowry, he mentioned:
“There was a fight between them on Friday night. Amit would torture my sister over dowry. The matter was, however, sorted on Friday night after my father spoke to Amit over phone and even met him at his sister’s place. That was not the first time that Amit had harassed her over dowry. He had been doing so for several months.”
Though the complaint has been lodged under sections of the Dowry Act, the accused has absconded. While sharing the details, Alok Dubey mentioned:
“We had sent a police team to arrest the accused, but he is absconding at the moment. A search is on for him,”
At IFORHER, we hope this family would get enough strength to bear the pain of the loss of their daughter. We hope the authorities would help this family get justice without any delay.
