Even though we are living in the 21st century, still many in our society treat women as second-class citizens. It breaks our heart how even well-to-do families treat women like slaves.

In a recent shocking incident, a 76-year-old builder shot dead his elder daughter-in-law for not serving breakfast on time. The incident happened on Thursday in Rabodi, Maharashtra, and the shooter is on the run.

Kashinath Patil, who was not on good terms with anyone in their household of two sons, their wives and four children, was served tea by Seema Patil, 42, after he had complained that he had not got breakfast.

In no time, the argument started and turned ugly. The father-in-law pulled out his revolver and shot his daughter-in-law point-blank in the stomach. As per the sources, the daughter-in-law fell down in a pool of blood and was rushed to a private hospital nearby, where she succumbed on Thursday night. After the shooting, Patil kept his firearm in his cupboard and went missing. The police are looking for him in a murder case.

While sharing the details of the incidents, Santosh Ghatekar, senior inspector of Rabodi police station mentioned: “For the past two years, the accused has been critical of the victim and used to complain to neighbours as well as family that both his daughters-in-law were not taking care of him. He claimed they don’t give him proper food, especially breakfast”.

Earlier, the daughters-in-law had pleaded with him to stop complaining and pointed out that they served him hot food putting in a lot of effort, but to no avail, said the police.

This ugly incident is a reminder of the heart-breaking reality that many women are still treated like slaves after marriage. We hope authorities would leave no stone unturned in providing speedy justice to this woman!
