Heartbreaking: Husband Beats Wife For Scolding Kids; How Society Punishes Tough Moms

by IForHer Team
December 30, 2019

It is sad and disheartening to see how our patriarchal mental set-up often criticizes moms for being tough on their children. Recently, a 27-year-old mother became the victim of such a mentality when she was beaten by her husband and mother-in-law for scolding her own kids.

A heart-wrenching incident came to light in Ahemdabad as a 27-year-old mother of two kids — a 5-yo son, 5, and 3-yo daughter, filed a complaint with the police on Saturday. In her complaint, she shared how she was severely beaten by her husband and mother-in-law.

And, the reason why she got beaten will break your heart.

She shared as her husband and mother-in-law disagreed with her scolding her two kids for playing in the dirt, they beat her heartlessly.

While mentioning the details of her ordeal in her FIR, the woman, who had married the man seven years ago, stated that her two kids had gone out to play on December 24. When they returned, she saw dirt all over their clothes and scolded them for getting filthy.

As mother-in-law and husband heard her scolding the kids, they got enraged and said if the children do not play on the ground, then who will. Post which, they got into a heated argument with the woman and maintained that playing in dirt increases the kids’ immunity.

In response, the woman shared that the kids would fall sick if they continue to play in the ground as it is harmful to their health. But, the argument didn’t go well with her mother-in-law who started abusing and beating her.

Post which, her husband not only sat on her but started pressing her neck. She tried hard to resist the abuse and started screaming for help. After hearing her screams,  her father-in-law and other neighbors rushed in and rescued her. The woman was beaten so mercilessly that she fell unconscious and had to be admitted to a private hospital.

Though the police have registered a case for assault and domestic violence against the two accused, we wonder how our patriarchal mindset blames and criticizes a woman for being tough on their children.

Exposing such a patriarchal mindset, recently an advertisement went viral. It carried the strong message “Mothers are often criticized for being tough on their children. It’s time we stood by them”. The ad portrayed a joint family eating a meal together when a boy throws a tantrum and refuses to eat his dinner. His mother’s response, followed by the reactions to it, is the crux of the story.

At IFORHER, we are in awe of this mother, who showed the courage to fight against her husband and in-laws for justice. It is never easy for a mother to scold her kids but she does it only to ensure her kids turn into better human beings.

We salute every mother who is tough on their kids because they want to raise them as responsible citizens of tomorrow. It is high time that our society stood with them rather than blaming or criticizing them.
