While the whole country is under lockdown, the abuse against women isn’t. It is painful to see how our society is failing its daughters, wives, and mothers.
Recently, a tragic incident surfaced that left many of us a heartbroken. As per HT, a woman was allegedly gang-raped and singed with cigarette butts by 4 men in front of her 5-year-old son.
As per the police, the incident happened on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday night. Five people, including the survivor’s husband, have been arrested.
While sharing her nightmare, the survivor told police that on the pretext of going to a nearby beach, her husband took her and their five-year-old son to his friend’s house.
What happened next was nothing less than a nightmare!
As per the reports, the woman alleged that firstly she was forced to drink alcohol. And then the men took her to a nearby vacant plot where she was sexually assaulted.
The survivor also claimed that the men burnt her with cigarette butts and slapped her many times.
When her son cried, the men attacked her 5-year-old as well. The mother claimed that she was allowed to go only on the promise that she will come back after dropping her son home.
Fortunately, on the way back the woman gestured for a vehicle to stop. When she narrated what happened to her, the occupants of the car then informed the police, and the woman was rushed to a hospital.
Thiruvananthapuram rural police superintendent Ashok Kumar shared with HT:
“Our preliminary investigation shows the husband was a party to the crime. He even forced his wife to not file a complaint. Some of the arrested have a criminal past.”
State Women Commission member Shahida Kamal said the victim will be given protection and the commission will ensure that maximum punishment is handed out to the offenders.
Heartbreaking incidents like such make us wonder, are women safe at all in our country. What this mother and son went through is nothing less than a nightmare. While we applaud this woman’s courage to stand for herself, we hope the authorities would get her justice.
In the midst of the increasing crimes against women, it is more important than ever to support these courageous souls who are standing for themselves. If you are one of those who would like to be supportive of such voices, then join us in this fight.
