People say motherhood is one of the most beautiful journeys that women embark on.
But, what if a woman can’t have a child?
Does she lose the right to live?
Is her existence only matter if she bears a child?
Being married for 7 years, when Datla Shailja and her husband couldn’t have a child, Datla’s life turned into a nightmare.
Datla Shailja, a 28-year-old tech professional, was working for an MNC in Hyderabad. The couple was staying in the apartment in Allapur Society.
According to police, as the couple did not have children, Raju and his mother would harass Shailaja. Her mother-in-law would say that she has ‘brought bad luck to the house’ and was the reason for her husband’s recent death.
Being distressed due to harassment for not having kids, Shailaja took an extreme step and committed suicide.

When Raju went to his native place to meet his mother, Shailaja was alone at home. On Saturday evening, she went to meet her mother and sister but came back in the night.
Later, when her sister called Shailaja, she didn’t reply. So, both mother and sister rushed to Shailaja’s home and found her hanging from the ceiling.
Shailaja’s father filed a complaint against his son-in-law and mother-in-law, claiming that their harassment was the reason behind his young daughter’s death.
The police have also recovered a suicide note, allegedly written by Shailaja, in which she states that her husband and mother-in-law were torturing her for not having kids and humiliated her.
We are wondering when society would stop blaming women for not being able to give birth to a baby?
Is it only a woman’s responsibility to bear a kid?
Even being aware that it takes both husband and wife to produce a kid, why are women the only one harassed and humiliated?
Being mothers ourselves, we have nothing but love and respect for mothers and motherhood. But, we feel that we should not box women into just motherhood.
We wish society would let women define themselves. It will still give them respect and love even if they can’t fulfill their dreams of having “Potis and Potas”.
Because women are much more than just a womb or a reproductive system.
