While we were remembering Nirbhaya after 6 years of the horrific rape incident, angry college students from Uttrakhand gathered to fight for justice for their 18-year-old classmate.
As per the HT, they are demanding the administration to hang the accused, who has gotten their classmate in a situation where she is struggling for her life.
And, if you would hear about the shocking incident, then you might also find yourself asking for the death penalty for the accused.
The teen, B.Sc. second-year student, was mercilessly set on fire by the 31-year-old man as she repeatedly turned down his love proposals.
She was punished for uttering that one word, which our society isn’t used to hearing. She said “No” to the love proposals of the 31-year-old man, who is married and a taxi driver by profession.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Pauri Garhwal, Jagat Ram Joshi,
“The incident took place on Sunday evening at 8 pm when the girl was on her way back home from college in her two-wheeler. The accused, intercepted and forced her to stop. He expressed his love to which the girl refused straightaway saying she did not want to talk to him. Furious at her reply, Singh poured petrol on her from a can that he was carrying, set her on fire and fled.”
He further added while talking to HT:
“After sometime, a passerby found her crying in pain and informed the police who reached the spot and rushed her to a nearby hospital from where she was later shifted to AIIMS Rishikesh considering her serious injuries.”
“Singh is married but does not have any child. Both of them lived in two separate villages at a distance of about 150-200 m. The accused was arrested from his village on Sunday evening.”
The woman was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh on Monday with 70-80 percent burns. But, on Wednesday afternoon, she was sent to Delhi Safdarjung Hospital’s dedicated burn ward as she continues to be critical.
While the girl is critical and on a ventilator, we pray for her speedy recovery and hope that we don’t lose another Nirbhaya.
But as a parent, we couldn’t stop ourselves from asking these questions –
Why she didn’t file an FIR complaint against the stalker?
Did she tell her family about the stalker and if yes, why didn’t they take any action against him?
And so many more…
We try so hard to teach our daughters to stand for their dignity – to stand for themselves. But, when we hear these stories, we feel scared.
The question that we need to ask ourselves: “Is our society really ready for strong independent women?”
