Its been 6 years since the horrific incident of ‘Nirbhaya rape’ case that shook the whole country.
The violence against the 23-year-old on a bus in the national capital had not only sparked angry protests but directed world-wide attention on the torture and sexual crimes against women in the country.
The brutality of the act was indicated by the medical reports – she suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, intestines, and genitals due to the assault, and doctors said that the damage indicated that a blunt object (suspected to the iron rod) may have inserted for penetration, by the 6 rapists.
With time either the rape cases are forgotten or lose grip on our minds, and something similar was about to happen with Nirbhaya case as well.
But on Saturday night, an incident happened that sent the chilling reminder of the Nirbhaya rape case to the whole country.
A tribal woman in Kolkata was raped and an iron rod was inserted in her private parts in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Saturday night.
[ifh_news_form]As per News18, the police said,
“The two accused, identified as Ratnu Munda and Parimal Roy, allegedly invited her husband for a liquor party. They forcibly took her reluctant husband on the pretext of resolving an old personal dispute. When the husband didn’t return even after 2 hours, the woman went out to look for him. She found him in an inebriated state. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused dragged her to a nearby bush and raped her”
Speaking to News18, Rajesh Kumar Singh, vice-chairman of Jalpaiguri Municipality, said,
“They also inserted a iron rod in her private parts. I arranged for an ambulance for her and at present she is under treatment at Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital. She is now stable and recovering.”
Enraged over the incident, people from the local tribal community ransacked the houses of the accused and demanded a stern action against them. The situation was later brought under control by the local police.
“The woman’s family members lodged a complaint at Dhupguri police station and both the accused Ratnu Munda and Parimal Roy were arrested. Both are residents of Magurmari area. Our investigation is on,” said Dendup Sherpa, Addl. SP (Rural), Jalpaiguri.
Though the incident reminded us of the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case, the anger in the society related to this incident seems to be lesser than what it was in 2012.
Have we accepted rape as a part of our society and are not bothered by such incidents anymore? We need to stand together and make sure the oppressed voices are heard and justice is served.
