21-YO Patient On Ventilator Support Allegedly Raped In Gurugram’s Leading Pvt. Hospital; Can We Stoop Any Lower?

October 29, 2020

In another shameful incident, a 21-year-old girl undergoing treatment for tuberculosis was allegedly raped in Fortis Hospital, Sector 44, Gurugram.

It is heartbreaking how our country is becoming unsafer for women with every passing day. Doesn’t matter, whether it is her home or a reputed hospital, women are not safe anywhere.

As per The Indian Express, a 21-year-old girl, who was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis, was allegedly raped while she was in the ICU. What is even more disturbing is the fact that it happened in one of the prestigious hospitals of Gurugram – Fortis Hospital.

According to the sources, the girl was admitted to the hospital on 21 October. And, because of her critical condition, she was put on ventilator support on the second day of her admission. She was in a semi-conscious state. But, on 27th October, the girl gained consciousness and confided in her father about the alleged incident.

As per TOI, the girl wrote the name of the accused, Vikas, on a piece of paper and signaled that she was raped. Post which, the family immediately filed the complaint with the police, who are currently investigating the matter. An FIR has been lodged under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.

Disgusted and saddened by what her daughter had to go through, the mother of the patient asked:

“How can anyone do such a thing with a patient who is on a ventilator,”

As per the Deputy Commissioner of Police, it isn’t clear whether Vikas is a hospital staffer or not. The police are yet scanning through CCTV footage. As per the hospital, the patient isn’t fit for giving a statement as of now.

Though as per Hindustan Times, Usha Kundu, Assistant Commissioner of Police claimed that the suspect is “outsourced and is a non-medical staff”.

According to the report published in IE, the hospital said:

“We have a zero-tolerance policy in such situations and are extending full cooperation and support including entire CCTV footage to the police,”

This incident is an ugly reflection of how unsafe our women are. We pray for strength for this young girl and her family as what they are going through is nothing less than a nightmare.

While we hope the culprit would soon be punished, this gruesome incident makes you wonder – if there is any place where women are safe?
