It is heartbreaking how even in the 21st century, women are still being punished for pursuing education. For those who believe the fight for women’s rights is not real, they should definitely go through the plight of this wife who was given divorce just because she wanted to study further.
As per the HT reports, a man in Rajasthan’s Barmer district gave his wife of six years triple talaq after she insisted on pursuing her studies further.
The 21-year-old wife is a graduate and wanted to go for higher studies. But sadly on asking her husband and his family, she got a shocker. Her husband not just said no, but also gave her triple talaq.
The women police station in Barmer has lodged the case against the man, as confirmed by Lata Begad, the station house officer.
The officer shared that the victim is a resident of Barmer’s Gagriya village and has lodged a case at the women police station. She was married to Murad Khan, who works as a junior engineer at Fulera in Jaipur.
In her complaint, the victim also alleged that just after her marriage, she was harassed for dowry by her in-laws. They forced her to leave her study but she anyhow completed the graduation.
The victim further alleged that her husband and in-laws were against her further studies and denied it when she requested.
She also shared with the police that in December 2019, her husband gave her triple talaq in the presence of her brother. Post which, she had returned to her father’s house with her brother and started living there.
In March 2020, when her husband sent her a written talaq, she hoped that the matter would be sorted out at the family level. Hence, she avoided involving the police. But when her husband refused to accept her back, she was left with no other choice but to approach the police.
SHO Begad said on basis of victim’s complaint, the case has been lodged under section 498A, 323, 354 of IPC, and section 3/4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
At IFORHER, we are heartbroken at what this wife had to go through just to fulfill her dream of studying more. We hope this woman would soon get justice and her dream to study further would soon be a reality.
