After struggling for a week, a 25-year-old college lecturer, who was set on fire by a stalker, breathed her last yesterday. Her traumatic story is just another reminder for our society, how we have failed our daughter once again.
Ankita Pisudde had been fighting for her life in the hospital after sustaining 35 to 40 percent “grade III” burns on February 3. When she was on her way to her college, she was set afire allegedly by Vikesh Nagrale (27), the family told news agency PTI.
Her treatment was carried out at the Orange City Hospital & Research Centre, located around 75 km from Wardha. While sharing the details Hinganghat’s police inspector Satyaveer Bandiwar mentioned:
“Doctors at the hospital declared her dead at 6.55 am today,”
The authorities earlier shared that the woman suffered from burns covering the scalp, face, right upper limb, left hand, upper back, full neck with inhalation injuries affecting the respiratory system also.
The hospital said that Monday early morning, her oxygen levels deteriorated inspite of ventilator support, coupled with decreasing urine output and reduction in blood pressure.
When Ankita was battling for her life, the State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that the trial of the arrested accused would be fast-tracked, and well-known lawyer Ujjwal Nikam would be appointed as a special prosecutor as per the request of the woman’s relatives. On Ankita’s demise, Deshmukh recently tweeted:
“Efforts were made to save the victim, but we are sorry she could not survive. The state government stands with the victim’s family. A government job and all other assistance will be provided to the victim’s family,”

The Bottom Line
Your heart will wrench in pain for this young daughter, who paid the price for being a woman in our country. Though the accused may get the harshest punishment, we couldn’t stop asking ourselves some questions:
- For how long the women in this country will pay the price for being courageous?
- How many more mothers, daughters or sisters need to be sacrificed before our country becomes a safe place for its women
At IForHer, while we are mourning the death of this young woman, we couldn’t stop ourselves but wonder the pain her parents must be going through. It is never easy to bid final goodbye to a young daughter for being strong and independent. We hope God will give the strength to these parents, who are living the nightmare that we wish no parents have to live.
