In our culture, teachers hold a very respectful place. A famous world-renowned poet, Kabir, once said:
“Kabir Guru Aur Sadhu Ku Sish Nababai Jaye
Kahai Kabir So Sevaka, Maha Param Pad Paye”
(If God and my Teacher were to stand before me, who would I first greet?
I will choose my Teacher; for it was through his teachings that I saw God.)
Hardly he knew that his beautiful lines will lose their meaning in the modern world. Some shameless teachers will turn themselves into sexual predators, who will attack our kids for their own selfish pleasures.
On Tuesday, a 30-year-old teacher from Ahmedabad was arrested by police when parents of three girls, including 2 minors, leveled charges of molestation against him.
So What Happened?
As per the filed FIR, one of the victim’s father stated that his daughter (18-yo) and her two classmates (17-yo) were taking tuitions from their class teacher. The class teacher was running a coaching class. On Monday, when the father came back home for lunch, he found his daughter at home rather than attending tuitions.
Perplexed by seeing his daughter at home, father asked his wife why the daughter was at home. That’s when his wife told him that their daughter had been molested by the teacher.
Agonized by what his daughter went through, the father approached the police and filed FIR against the teacher.
As per TOI, the teacher has been identified as Hitesh Ishwar Patel.
What These Young Girls Went Through?
As per TOI, the 18-year-old said,
“The teacher asked me to switch off the lights in the classroom (as) tuitions ended in the evening of January 4. When I was switching off the lights, he closed the room doors, held me in his arms, kissed me forcibly and touched my private parts.”
When 18-year-old told her classmates about the traumatic incident, they told her that the teacher had also forced them to sit in his lap.
As per the officials,
“The two other girls also told the police that they were frequently groped by Patel and he would demand sexual favours from them.”
The girls were also threatened to be killed if they mentioned the incident to anyone.
While the police registered a case of molestation under the sections of POCSO Act, we want to celebrate the courage of this young lady, who stood tall against her molester.
What We Can Learn From Her & Her Parents?
In today’s world, no one can deny the danger of sexual abuse that lurks over our kids – irrespective of the fact that its a son or a daughter.
But, we can learn a couple of great lessons from the saga of this courageous daughter and her parents. We have enlisted 3 major lessons that any parent can learn from this story but we are sure there could be more.
#1 Raise Your Kids To Stand Against Sexual Abuse
The most difficult thing during sexual abuse is to raise your voice against it. It’s important for us to teach them to speak up if they or someone they know is being harmed by the molester.
Additionally, it would be good to teach them some strategies to interrupt the sexual abuse.
#2 Keep Lines Of Communication Open
Doesn’t matter whether our children are 8 or 18, no parent can deny the importance of having open communication with them.
It is important as it makes it easier for the kids to come to parents if they are undergoing abuse of any kind – physical, sexual or emotional.
#3 Don’t Stay Quiet; Take Action
Most of the times, the parents tend to stay quiet and don’t take actions even after the child has opened up about the sexual abuse.
Why? Because parents are scared of ‘Log Kya Kahengey?’
This doesn’t only breach the trust between the child and the parents but also makes the child self-blame for sexual abuse. This might lead to trauma which child doesn’t only bear into his childhood but also in their adulthood.
In case you have any story of how you or someone you know protected their kids against the abuse, do let us know.
We would love to build awareness about the abuse that our kids undergo and how we can protect our kids against it.
