In these times, when our society is struggling with the increasing cases of dowry harassment, there is a shocking incident that has come to light from Kerala.
Recently, many were left shocked and heartbroken when Vismaya, an MBBS student in Kerala, lost her life due to dowry harassment. Post her death, Kerala administration launched a vigorous campaign to raise awareness against dowry & harassment, to ensure no daughter loses her life again.
But recently, another shameful incident of dowry harassment from Kerala has surfaced. As per sources, a 31-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and harassed by her husband, who even thrashed the woman’s father, breaking his bones.
What is even more shameful is the fact that the accused allegedly threatened the victim that she would have the same fate as Vismaya, one of the recent victims of dowry harassment in Kerala.
As per the reports, the woman, a native of Kochi, married the accused on April 12. It was a second marriage for both the woman and her husband. But since the beginning, the husband used to allegedly harass and threaten her with dowry demands. The girl’s family even shifted her gold to a bank locker over the concerns that the accused may misuse her gold.
While sharing her ordeal, the victim mentioned,“This further provoked him and his family. The accused, along with his mother, started physically and mentally harassing me. I was not even allowed to have food.” She further added,“Following the death of Vismaya in Kollam over suspected dowry harassment, my husband even threatened that I would meet the same fate if his share of gold wasn’t given to him.”
As per the reports, on July 9, the victim was sent out of the house to get food. But, rather than buying food, she went to her father’s home. On July 17, the woman’s father was allegedly thrashed when he visited the in-laws to discuss the matter. He allegedly sustained fractures on his ribs and leg.
An FIR has been registered against the husband and his parents under IPC Sections 498A, 323, 506, 34 along with Sections 3 and 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act.
At IFORHER, we are heartbroken to see how even in 21st century, women are struggling at hands of greedy in-laws and husbands! It is high time that parents start refusing to get their daughters married to these greedy monsters! Because, an unmarried daughter is better than a dead daughter!
