In the midst of disappointment that came along with the delay in the hanging of Nirbhaya convicts, there are details of another heartbreaking incident that surfaced recently.
On Wednesday, a special court in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, delivered the verdict in one of the most shocking and heartless incidents of abuse. For “indecent conduct” with a 7-year-old deaf and dumb girl, the court has sentenced an 80-year-old man to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Special public prosecutor Jagdish Chouhan informed that during a program on October 19, 2019, the man named Girdharilal Meghwal called the 7-year-old minor and molested her. Since the girl was mute and deaf, the helpless child failed to raise alarm.
However, the incident was caught on the mobile camera, which the girl’s younger brother was playing with. As soon as the girl’s family members came to know about the incident, they approached the police and filed a complaint the next day.
On the basis of the strong evidence, the police booked the 80-year-old accused under Section 354 (criminal force to any woman) of the Indian Penal Code as well as under relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 and Divyang Act.
Putting this case into the rarest of the rare case category, the charge sheet in the case was submitted within 19-day of the incident.
The courageous & brave victim described before the court her ordeal in sign language. On the basis of the minor’s statement, and the video of the act, the judge held the 80-year-old shameless man guilty of molesting the girl, informed special public prosecutor Jagdish Chouhan.
By fast-tracking the case, the court has set an example as it has given the judgment in the case within less than three months.
Along with 13 years of imprisonment, the court has also ordered the eighty-year-old to pay the fine of 15,000 to the girl as compensation.
