We live in the 21st century and yet women are still fighting for their freedom and right to work.
As a wife, we need encouragement and support from our husbands during our quest to step up and be the women we want to be.
The path to achieving success becomes easier if we are blessed with a supportive husband – Indra Nooyi, Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiran Majumdar are just the examples.
On one side we have these excellent examples, and on the other, women at grassroots are still fighting for their basic right to work. What makes it worse is that these are the women who want to work to ensure their family and kids can live a better life.
A 27-year-old woman from Rajasthan kept fighting this battle until she gave up and committed suicide.
Saroj, a mother of two, wanted to work and earn money to give a better future to her kids. But her unemployed husband wouldn’t let her, and this led to constant fights between the couple.
The challenge of running the household with minimal money, and not able to help her family led Saroj to take the extreme step. On Tuesday, Saroj fed poison to both her kids – Sandeep (4) and Anushka (6) and then used the same poison to kill herself.
According to the police:
“Saroj wanted to support the family by getting a job. Her husband did not let her go out to work. This appears to be the primary reason behind her taking the extreme step.”
Found unconscious in their house, Saroj and her kids were taken to the nearby hospital. The doctors declared Saroj and Sandeep brought dead, while her daughter Anushka died during the treatment.
After hearing about the news of her death, Saroj’s family registered a complaint against her husband Ganesh. After the initial investigation, police have arrested the husband in relation to death and said that they are investigating further.
Saroj is not the only brave soul who lost her battle of freedom to work and give her kids a better future. In our country, there are millions of women, who are still kept behind the house walls, in the name of age-old traditions!

After reading this if you don’t feel disgusted and disheartened, then probably you are part of the problem.
At I For Her, we pray that Saroj’s soul rests in peace. But, we wish more and more women fight against this archaic thought-process and stand for their right to work rather than commit suicide.
We stand with all women, who are battling all the odds and trying to build a better future. We want this message to go out loud and clear to people like this husband:
“You’re not God! So, stop acting like one and let your wife live her dreams. If you don’t, she might just turn in Kaali and snatch away what is rightfully hers”
