The current lockdown has put many women at risk as cases of domestic abuse continue to surge across the country. What is saddening is the fact that the severity of cases of domestic abuse is getting worse by every passing day.
In an appalling incident, a pregnant 30-year-old Delhi woman was allegedly killed by her husband on Monday morning on a petty issue. In order to punish his wife for meeting one of her relatives in the neighborhood without informing him, this man killed his pregnant wife.
According to TOI report, the shocking incident took place in South Delhi.
What Happened?
Hemalata was a 30-year-old woman with 5 months of pregnancy. As per the sources, the husband was angry with his wife as she had gone to a relative’s place without informing him. This led the husband to allegedly strangle her at their home in South Delhi’s Dakshinpuri area on Monday morning.
The police mentioned that around 12.30 am, Vijay, the accused, reached the Ambedkar Nagar police station and informed the officers about the murder of his wife.
Atul Kumar Thakur, DCP, South Delhi mentioned:
“A team of officers visited Vijay’s house and found the body of the woman lying in the bedroom. A strangulation mark was found on her neck. During interrogation, Vijay confessed that he strangled her following a quarrel.”
The victim’s sister, Asha also claimed that the victim was being tortured by her husband. He wouldn’t allow the victim to meet anyone.
On Sunday evening, when the accused was away to buy a few household stuff, Hemlata went to Vijay’s sister’s house. Vijay got angry when he did not find her at home on return.
A few days back, in another incident of domestic abuse – a husband threw boiling water at a wife because she refused to make him coffee in Bangalore.
Domestic Violence During Lockdown
We are heartbroken with the increasing domestic violence against women in India.
Recently amid lockdown, at the Pitampura region in Delhi, an educated couple had a verbal argument. This argument turned into domestic abuse after the husband slapped the wife. A similar incident happened in Bihar.
In order to handle the increasing cases of domestic violence during the coronavirus lockdown period, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched a WhatsApp number to report cases of domestic violence.
@NCWIndia have launched a ‘WHATSAPP NUMBER’ for help & assistance to women experiencing #DomesticViolence at wake of #Covid19Lockdown.

It is heartbreaking to see how lockdown has hit women with domestic violence, overwork, and pain. In tough times like these, it is sad and depressing how women are facing the ugly face of our patriarchal society.
