Finally, the big judgment arrived that every Indian parent was waiting for.
The judgment that gives us some relief that our plea to save our kids in the sex-deprived society isn’t falling on the deaf ears.
Thanks to Madhya Pradesh High Court a teacher who raped a 4-year-old girl, so violently that she had to have her intestines realigned, has been awarded death sentence.
Mahendra Singh Gond will be the first person to be hanged since a change in POCSO law last year which introduced the death penalty for child rapists.
Trauma that the 4-year-old went through
At the time of the attack, NDTV reported that Gond, the teacher, was drunk and had kidnapped the 4-yo from her cot after speaking to her father. He kidnapped her and after the assault dumped her body in the bushes assuming her to be dead.
As per the prosecutor,
”Taking advantage of the situation, Gond took the girl away from her house and raped her. After the sexual assault, he dumped her into the bushes”
Within hours of the assault, Gond was arrested and a desperate search was launched. After some time, the girl’s family found her with heart-wrenching injuries and took her to hospital.
Her medical condition was so severe that she was airlifted to a Delhi hospital.
Her intestines were damaged so miserably after the sexual assault that she had to undergo surgery to realign them.
But none of these harsh injuries and unbearing pain could succumb the courage of the brave girl.
The brave girl made a statement during her recovery to help the authorities convict her twisted attacker.
The Court sent an Important Message through Judgement
The High Court confirmed the death sentence last month and the date of his execution has been fixed for March 2, the Times of India reported. However, the hanging can still be stopped by the Supreme Court or the President.
Confirming the death sentence, judges said:
“Courts cannot evade their duty to be tough with hard-core criminals so that there is some deterrent against indulging in such gruesome crimes.”
They further added:
“The incident assumes greater significance because the person involved is a teacher who is supposed to teach lessons in morality to his students.”
Why this Judgement is Important
Last year the POCSO law (The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012) was changed to allow the death penalty for rapists who attack a child aged under 12. As a country, we have been shaken by the series of rape cases in the recent past.
The increasing number of rape cases shows how our social DNA has degraded.
A man without morals is like a wild beast loosed upon the world, who will destroy everyone to please his own pleasures. It doesn’t matter to a beast whether she is a 40-year-old woman or a 4-year-old girl.
And, when social DNA degrades, only harsh punishments could help any society to discipline its own citizen.
Hence, this death sentence is a bold step to tell the society that though we have sacrificed many young kids in the past for the sexual pleasure of some sex addicts, we won’t sacrifice them anymore!
Do let us know if you also welcome this bold judgement and believe that we are moving in the right direction to make our country safe for kids?
