In yet another shocking incident, a husband allegedly cut his wife’s face with a knife to punish her wife for visiting her maternal house against his wishes to mourn her father’s death. The victim’s father died a month ago in the Bilsi area of UP’s Bareilly on Wednesday afternoon.
Husband Wanted To Teach Her A Lesson
A 26-year-old woman, Imarti, was rushed to Bilsi community health centre with multiple cut injuries on her face. Imarti said,
“It was the first Holi after my father’s death, so I visited my maternal house against my husband’s wishes. This enraged my husband, who came to my mother’s place and attacked me with a knife”.
In northern India, a tradition is followed where close relatives of a deceased person gather during Holi to mourn his death. Bilsi circle officer Anirudha Singh told TOI,
“We have registered an FIR under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC against Chandrapal, a resident of Etah district, who fled the spot after the incident. We have sent a team to Etah to nab him. The woman is undergoing treatment at a government hospital and her condition is stable. We may add a few sections to the FIR after receiving the supplementary medical report”
It is heartbreaking how men in our country feel that their wives are their slaves or their property. Why does a daughter need to seek permission from her husband to go to her home to mourn her father’s death? Is Husband woman’s master? Is she a husband’s chattel?
This incident is just another reminder of how Indian women are unsafe in their own homes. While our policymakers are busy making comments on women’s clothes and body-weight, we want to request them to use their energies on making our society worth living for women!
