It’s heartbreaking to see how even in the 21st century, a husband didn’t shy away from putting wife’s honor on sale after his demand for dowry wasn’t met.
While we come across disheartening news about harassment of educated Indian women for the sake of dowry, we wonder if anything has changed for women in Modern India.
Even in the 21st century, when a girl is born you could hear many relatives and friends telling parents:
“Ladki hui hai, abhi se shaadi k liye jodna shuru krdo.”
(Translation: Girl is born, now start saving for her dowry)
A few months back Sushmitha, a 26-year-old Kannada singer, committed suicide over alleged dowry harassment. Her last words were – “Amma I Miss You…Don’t Leave My Husband”
Now another shocking incident has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh that will leave you disgusted and ashamed. As per the sources, a husband from UP allegedly put up his wife’s “honor for sale” after his demand for dowry were not met.
As reported by Outlook India,
“The heartbreaking incident happened when Puneet from Thuthia village was unhappy as his demand for a motorcycle was not fulfilled by his in-laws.”
The accused not only started harassing his newlywed wife but also started beating her for the bike. Fed up with the torture and harassment, the wife decided to go back to her parent’s house.
Her courage to stand up against harassment further upset Puneet, who then supposedly posted his wife’s picture on social media along with her phone number. He went on to ask strangers to pay money to talk to his wife. As per the sources, he even suggested they could ask her for sex.
Once, the wife started receiving the disgusting calls, she filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell. She even named her husband as the accused.
While sharing further details, Sanjay Singh, PRO in the SP office mentioned:
“We arrested Puneet on Monday and he has been sent to jail. This is an unusual case of crime against women and we will ensure strict punishment for the accused.”
Though the man has been arrested and a case has been registered, we are heartbroken how even in the 21st century the evil practice of dowry still prevails. Though many people have started taking a stand against dowry, still cases like these make you wonder if society will ever change!
