As the world is struggling with COVID-19, many heartbreaking stories of people striving hard to save their family members are surfacing every day.
These stories of struggle connect us with these strangers in such a powerful way that we couldn’t stop ourselves from feeling their pain, agony, grief, and helplessness.
One such story is of a couple – a 24-year-old woman and her husband – who were failed by our hospitals and doctors in Dehradun, Uttrakhand.
As per the sources, a 24-year-old woman who needed urgent medical attention due to complications in her pregnancy was told by a hospital to come after two months. Suspected to be a COVID-19 carrier, this woman was denied any help from four more hospitals.
What happened next with this mom will definitely leave you heartbroken.
This to-be mother not only lost her premature twins but also died herself days after giving birth.
As per sources, the woman was finally admitted to a fifth hospital after a local MLA intervened. But she died on Thursday, two days after giving birth to the babies in the seventh month of her pregnancy.
The Uttarakhand health secretary, chief medical officer, and the district magistrate have ordered three separate inquiries into the incident. But it is heartbreaking how our hospitals’ and doctors’ lack of effort led to the death of this new mom and her two babies.
Kamlesh Saini, who cremated his wife, Sudha, on Friday, recalled how a government hospital denied helping his wife, who first complained of pain in the stomach.on Monday.
“The hospital told us to come back when she completes nine months of her pregnancy and said that she was anaemic and must be administered blood. They didn’t even examine her properly.”
A day later, Sudha gave birth to twins who died just hours later. Her health then got worse.
And on Thursday, the couple lived a nightmare as they were turned away by several hospitals as the woman was running a temperature. The husband, who lost his babies and wife in a week’s time further added:
“I took her to two government hospitals and two private hospitals but all of them refused to admit her, claiming that she had high temperature and could be a Covid-19 patient.”
After the victim’s family managed to contact Cantt. MLA Harbans Kapoor on Thursday evening, the woman was admitted to a government hospital. She died two hours later in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
At IFORHER, we are heartbroken about how our authorities inaction destroyed this whole family in a matter of a week. We hope for strength and courage for Kamlesh who has to suffer this unbearable pain.
As we pray for the Sudha and her twins to rest in peace, we hope authorities will swing in action to take all the mandatory steps to ensure no mother has to meet the same fate as Sudha.
