Every time we feel we are taking a step forward in the area of women empowerment, something happens that makes us reconsider if we ever be able to have empowered women in our country!
When women across India took courage to share their sexual abuse stories, a community in Madhya Pradesh asked girls not to wear jeans and a top.
According to ANI, the community has asked girls not to wear jeans and tops.
Manjula Mali, president, women committee of the Alirajpur community told ANI that:
[ifh_news_form]“We are holding a Garba programme. We have decided that girls above the age of 10 will not wear jeans and a top. They will not wear it in houses too and not in any of other events…The reason is that men don’t look at women in a decent way. So, we need to make our girls understand,”
And, Himmat Mali, the president of the community added:
“We have taken this decision because boys don’t see women properly. We want to run this event properly as per our religion and customs,”
What precedent are we setting in this society by asking our daughters to be restricted just because our sons can’t control themselves? It takes us back to the age-old discussion of:
“Rape doesn’t happen because of clothes – It happens because of mindset!”
If clothes would have been the problem then why babies or little kids are raped! As a society, we need to do a better job at raising our boys otherwise,
Gar ab bhi na sudhre toh ek din aisa aayega,
iss desh ko beti dene se bhaghwaan bhi ghabhrayega.
