How do you think your daughter should react when she is being molested on the streets?
Do you think she should return back home and be silent about it as it would destroy her reputation? And, learn to accept it because she is a woman.
Or,
Rather than keeping silent and cursing herself for this treatment, she should teach the molester a lesson so that he never thinks about molesting someone even in his dreams.
We prefer the latter over the former.
We want to raise daughters who stand for their own rights. We want to raise daughters, who know how to protect their own dignity.
And, if you are also like us, then you will find it disgusting to know what happened with this 11th class Student of Bapu Inter College, Kushinagar.
On Thursday, she taught her molester a fine lesson on civic duties so that he doesn’t molest anyone again. She not only beat him in full public view but also got him arrested.
Before you start celebrating her heroic act, you need to know what happened next.
Rather than being hailed as a hero, on Saturday, she was expelled from her school in the name of disciplinary action.
The girl was intercepted by a 25-year-old man on her way back from school. He held her hand and passed a lewd comment.
She couldn’t resist but to beat up the molester with her slippers. Later, she dialled 100 for help.
The accused was not only booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code but was also sent to jail.
On Saturday, the girl was heartbroken when she was asked by her Principal to collect her transfer certificate as her brave act has caused harm to the school’s reputation.
While talking to HT, she said:
“He (principal) told me that I created a tamasha (scene) by blowing the matter out of proportion.”
Whereas the principal has justified the school’s action:
“She left the school before classes got over. Such indiscipline will encourage others to break rules. So the disciplinary action was taken.”
However, a teacher from the school feels that the school action might be sending the wrong message to the other girls. The teacher said,
“Disciplinary action against the brave girl will only discourage others from raising their voices.”
As per a recent update, the expulsion order of the Kushinagar school girl was revoked by the principal and he has tendered an apology for causing ordeal to this young girl.
CB Shah, the Principal of Mahatma Gandhi Inter College further added:
“I have written to the DM, SP and other concerned authorities that the suspension has been revoked and the girl’s name is not being struck off from the school roll.”
Sadly in an era, where women are struggling with sexual abuse, physical violence, emotional abuse and much more, every parent is trying hard to raise our daughters to stand up against these crimes.
How will we raise the next generation of Jhansi Lakshmi Bai or Nirbhaya, if we let the society silence their voices by punishing them for their act of bravery?
