In the recent times, we have called out Bollywood for promoting toxic characters as romantic heroes. But, we must definitely say that Bollywood has taken baby steps in taking a stance on feminism and shattering patriarchy. Here’s a list of scenes that has revealed the ugly reality of what women have to face in our society:
1. Gangubai Kathiawadi
Helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie has so many scenes that give you shrills and goosebumps. While there are many scenes that brazenly crush patriarchy to pieces, one particular scene became a topic of discussion. In the scene, when other women in the brothel are getting Kamli (Gangu’s best friend in brothel) ready for her final journey, Gangubai made a statement that gives goosebumps to the audience. She asks for Kamli’s legs to be strapped tightly because men, even with the dead, cannot be trusted.
2. Dil Dhadakne Do
How can we forget the particular scene where Sunny (Farhan Akhtar) gives a perfect reply to Ayesha’s husband (Rahul Bose). This scene is the best reply to society’s patriarchal thought process !
3. Dev.D
Chanda’s powerful dialogue about blaming the perpetrator rather than victim reveals how our society always blame the victim. While she being the victim of patriarchy was shamed and insulted by the people themselves who actually watched her leaked video shamelessly. This powerful dialogue is a reminder to place the blame where it belongs!
4. Piku
Another powerful take on women’s status in Indian marriages! This scene talks about how our society makes the institution of marriage operates. It is sad how women are burdened with endless expectations and expected to live life for others, and not for themselves.
5. Thappad
Exposing the patriarchal mindset, the movie shows how at every step, Amrita, who is an abuse survivor, is told to be tolerant of domestic violence. With the hard-hitting storyline and the jolting dialogues, it is a lesson for our society to not disparage women’s honor and dignity.
6. English Vinglish
English Vinglish is an inspiring story of a simple homemaker and her immense grit to overcome her insecurities. This movie showcases how our society not only shamelessly overburdens women with endless responsibilities but also never appreciates their efforts.
7. Pink
Another powerful scene, which is a reminder of our society’s double standards!
