A new week brings plenty of fresh movies, shows and documentaries across Netflix, JioHotstar, Prime Video, Apple TV and more. From Lanterns to Outer Banks Season 5 to Welcome to the Jungle, there is something for almost every kind of binge-watcher. Here are the biggest new OTT releases arriving this week.
New OTT Releases This Week (August 17 – 23)
1. Lanterns (JioHotstar | August 17)
DC’s much-awaited superhero series brings together veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart after they are pulled into a mysterious murder investigation on Earth. As the two intergalactic cops dig deeper, the case begins exposing a much larger conspiracy with dangerous consequences. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead the series alongside Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen.
2. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 18 (JioHotstar | August 18)
Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dee and Frank return for another season of terrible ideas and completely unpredictable disasters. This time, the gang finds itself dealing with everything from a Renaissance fair and wedding chaos to workplace automation, conspiracy theories and an unusual inheritance. Charlie Day, Rob Mac, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito return to lead the long-running comedy.
3. Toy Story 5 (Prime Video, Apple TV & More – Buy/Rent | August 18)
Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the toys face a very different problem when Bonnie becomes obsessed with a frog-shaped tablet named Lilypad. As screens begin replacing traditional playtime, the toys start wondering whether children still need them in the same way. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz, while Greta Lee joins the franchise as Lilypad.
4. Here the Whole Time (Netflix | August 19)
Felipe is an insecure and introverted teenager hoping to spend a peaceful summer at home until his longtime childhood crush, Caio, unexpectedly comes to stay with his family. Suddenly forced to spend two weeks under the same roof, Felipe has to deal with his insecurities as his feelings become increasingly difficult to hide. Based on Vitor Martins’ novel, the coming-of-age romance stars Miguel Lallo and Diego Lira.
5. Blood Sacrifice (Netflix | August 20)
Two police officers are found brutally murdered after responding to what appears to be a home invasion, beginning a disturbing investigation in Stockholm. Detective Thomas Berg soon realises the killings may be part of a larger attack on the city’s police force and reluctantly turns to his estranged father, a brilliant retired detective, for help. Jakob Oftebro and Peter Andersson lead this five-part Swedish crime thriller.
6. Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter (Prime Video | August 20)
This feature-length documentary explores the extraordinary career and complicated journey of tennis legend Novak Djokovic. From his childhood in Serbia to becoming one of the most successful players in tennis history, the film looks at the sacrifices, pressure and mindset behind his achievements. Directed by The Last Dance filmmaker Jason Hehir, it also features interviews with Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and other tennis greats.
7. Outer Banks Season 5 (Netflix | August 20)
The Pogues return for their final adventure after the devastating events of Season 4 leave them grieving the death of JJ and desperate for revenge. With the Blue Crown gone and Chandler Groff still at large, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and Cleo must decide how far they are willing to go to settle the score. Their increasingly uneasy alliance with Rafe could become their only chance of surviving what comes next.
8. Pyaar Prema Kalyanam (Netflix | August 21)
Pavi refuses to follow the usual tradition of leaving her family home after marriage, so her husband Elan moves in with her family instead. The unusual arrangement quickly creates hilarious clashes as he tries to adjust to life with his wife, her parents and an especially demanding mother-in-law. Saanve Megghana and Elan lead the Tamil family entertainer alongside Radikaa Sarathkumar, M.S. Bhaskar and Yogi Babu.
9. A Beautiful Obsession (Lionsgate Play | August 21)
This four-part sports docuseries goes behind the scenes during a turbulent chapter at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. The series follows the pressure inside the club as defeats, difficult decisions and major changes force one of football’s most successful teams to rebuild. With dressing-room access and behind-the-scenes footage, it offers fans a closer look at the emotional side of managing a football dynasty.
10. Facing El Chapo (Netflix | August 21)
A routine traffic stop takes a terrifying turn when Mexican police officers Carmona and Rosales discover that the man they have stopped is JoaquĂn “El Chapo” Guzmán. Suddenly responsible for holding one of the world’s most dangerous cartel leaders while waiting for backup, the officers find themselves trapped in an increasingly dangerous situation. Inspired by true events, the crime thriller stars Alfonso Herrera and NoĂ© Hernández.
11. Stillwater Season 5 (Apple TV | August 21)
Wise panda Stillwater returns with Karl, Addy and Michael for five new stories about dealing with everyday challenges. Through gentle humour, mindfulness and thoughtful storytelling, Stillwater helps the siblings better understand their emotions and see difficult situations from a different perspective. The award-winning animated family series is based on Jon J Muth’s popular Zen books.
12. Jana Nayagan (ZEE5 | August 21)
Vijay stars as Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a former police officer who is pulled back into a dangerous conflict when an old ideological battle returns to threaten the people around him. As political power, personal loyalties and violence collide, he is forced to confront an enemy determined to control everything in his path. Directed by H. Vinoth, the political action drama also stars Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Prakash Raj.
13. Chennai Love Story (SonyLIV | August 21)
Nivedita is struggling to rebuild her life after being abandoned by her fiancé when she moves to Chennai and meets Steven, an optimistic aspiring filmmaker. Their unexpected friendship slowly helps her rediscover happiness and gives both of them a chance at love. Kiran Abbavaram and Sri Gouri Priya lead this Telugu romantic drama about heartbreak, healing and starting over.
14. Welcome to the Jungle (JioHotstar | August 21)
A chaotic Bollywood film shoot in the middle of a jungle goes spectacularly wrong when the crew unexpectedly becomes tangled in a real and dangerous operation. What follows is a mix of mistaken identities, criminals, action and ridiculous situations as the characters struggle to understand what is actually happening around them. Akshay Kumar leads the huge ensemble alongside Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Jacqueline Fernandez, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade and Rajpal Yadav.
