Netflix’s Animals, starring Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington, begins as a kidnapping thriller but ends with a shocking twist. In this Animals Ending Explained, we uncover how a desperate attempt to rescue a child turns into a disturbing story of power, privilege, political ambition and betrayal.

Animals Ending Explained: Who Really Saves Hector & Why Does Mark Lie?

Directed by Ben Affleck, the film follows Mark Kimball, a wealthy lawyer running for mayor of Los Angeles, and his wife Abigail. Their seemingly perfect life falls apart when kidnappers demand $7 million for their son’s safe return. But a shocking revelation changes everything: the criminals have kidnapped the wrong child.

As the story unfolds, Mark faces a difficult choice that reveals how far he is willing to go to protect his future. And by the time the final credits roll, the person celebrated as the hero isn’t the one who truly deserves it.

But who really saves Hector? What happens to the kidnappers? And why does Mark lie about the rescue? Let’s break down the film’s shocking ending and what it really means.

Spoilers ahead for Netflix’s Animals.

Animals Plot Explained: What Happens in the Netflix Thriller?

Mark Kimball appears to have everything. He lives in a luxurious Los Angeles home with his wife Abigail and their young son Denny. He is wealthy, influential and determined to win the mayoral election.

But behind the picture-perfect family life, things are already falling apart.

Mark has secretly been taking money from the family’s bank account to finance his struggling political campaign. Abigail, meanwhile, feels increasingly disconnected from her husband and has begun an affair with a university professor.

Their troubles take a terrifying turn when an unknown caller claims to have kidnapped Denny and demands $7 million for his release.

Desperate to save their child, Mark and Abigail turn to Dayle, a mysterious woman with the connections needed to arrange the ransom. In return for her help, she demands a substantial payment and takes control of the deed to their home as security.

But the situation changes when they discover that Denny was never kidnapped.

The child being held hostage is Hector, the son of Ramon, an undocumented worker whose partner Cecilia works as the Kimballs’ housekeeper.

Suddenly, the question is no longer how much Mark will sacrifice to save his own son. It is how much he is willing to sacrifice to save someone else’s.

Why Does Mark Refuse to Pay Hector’s Ransom?

When Mark discovers the kidnappers have taken Hector instead of Denny, his priorities change dramatically.

Dayle presents three options. Mark can involve the police, pay the ransom or arrange for the kidnappers to be killed so the money can be recovered.

He chooses the third option.

The decision reveals the uncomfortable truth behind Mark’s public image. He wants to be seen as a compassionate leader, yet when another family’s child is in danger, he is unwilling to risk losing millions of dollars.

The contrast with Ramon is particularly striking.

Ramon has no political influence, wealth or powerful connections. His immigration status also makes approaching the authorities dangerous. Yet he is prepared to risk everything to find his son.

Mark has almost every advantage imaginable, but his decisions are shaped by money, reputation and self-preservation.

Animals Ending Explained: What Happens During the Final Kidnapping Exchange?

The final confrontation takes place near the Los Angeles River, far from the wealthy neighbourhood where Mark lives.

Following the kidnappers’ instructions, Mark arrives carrying millions of dollars. Dayle has arranged for an armed associate named Rand to follow him and eliminate the criminals after Hector is released.

The kidnappers force Mark down a steep slope and demand that he count the money.

Then, one of the abductors appears wearing a rabbit mask, pushing Hector towards the same slope. Mark manages to catch the frightened child before he is seriously injured.

For a brief moment, it appears the rescue might end without further violence.

But as two masked kidnappers move towards the ransom money, Rand shoots them.

Mark and Hector seem to be safe. Unfortunately, Dayle has made a disastrous mistake.

She believed there were only two kidnappers.

There is actually a third.

Who Kills the Kidnappers in Animals?

The ending features a violent confrontation involving three kidnappers.

Rand shoots and kills the first two abductors as they attempt to collect the ransom.

However, a third kidnapper emerges unexpectedly and shoots Dayle and Rand.

With Dayle’s plan collapsing, Mark finds himself facing an armed criminal with no obvious way to escape.

Just when it seems Mark could be killed, another shot brings down the remaining kidnapper.

The person who fires it is Ramon.

Having discovered where Mark was heading, Ramon secretly followed him to the ransom exchange. His determination to rescue Hector ultimately saves both his son and Mark.

This is the film’s most important reversal.

Throughout the story, Mark has been positioned as the powerful man capable of solving the crisis. But when everything goes wrong, the person who saves everyone is the father who has the least power.

Does Hector Survive in Animals?

Yes, Hector survives and is reunited with his father.

Despite the dangerous exchange and the shootout, Hector makes it out alive.

Ramon’s decision to follow Mark proves crucial. Without his intervention, the third kidnapper could have killed Mark, and the situation might have ended very differently.

However, Hector’s rescue does not bring the kind of happy ending audiences might expect.

The events surrounding the kidnapping place Ramon, an undocumented immigrant, under intense public attention. Rather than remaining in the United States, he eventually returns to Mexico with Cecilia and Hector.

They leave with money taken from Dayle, giving the family a chance to rebuild their lives.

Although Ramon saves his son and Mark, he does not receive the public recognition for his actions.

That honour goes to someone else.

Why Does Mark Lie About Saving Hector?

After the shootout, Mark realises that he has an opportunity to control what the public believes happened.

Dayle is badly wounded and dying. Rather than helping her, Mark takes her phone, which contains recordings that could expose the truth about the kidnapping operation.

He also disposes of her body and the bodies of the dead kidnappers.

Then he creates an entirely different version of events.

Mark tells the public that Ramon searched for his missing son while Mark himself killed the kidnapper.

In reality, Ramon fired the final shot that saved Mark’s life.

By taking credit for the rescue, Mark transforms himself into a courageous political figure who supposedly risked everything for another family’s child.

His actions during the crisis, including the decision to arrange the kidnappers’ deaths, are pushed aside in favour of a much more flattering public narrative.

Mark does face legal consequences, but they are relatively minor. He receives probation and community service.

The bigger outcome is political.

Does Mark Become Mayor at the End of Animals?

Yes, Mark wins the Los Angeles mayoral election.

The kidnapping incident unexpectedly strengthens his public image, particularly among Latino voters.

Before the crisis, Mark had been struggling to gain sufficient support from the Latino community. After presenting himself as the man who saved Hector, he receives widespread admiration.

The irony is difficult to miss.

The man whose actions actually saved Hector is forced to leave the country, while the politician who stole credit for that act uses the story to advance his career.

By the final scenes, Mark’s political ambitions have become even greater.

During an interview with Gayle King, the possibility of a future presidential campaign comes up. Although Mark avoids openly admitting that he wants to run, the conversation suggests he is already thinking beyond becoming mayor.

The kidnapping has not destroyed his career.

It has helped launch him towards an even more powerful position.

What Happens to Mark and Abigail’s Marriage?

One of the more surprising aspects of the ending is that Mark and Abigail do not separate.

Throughout the kidnapping crisis, their secrets are exposed.

Abigail learns that Mark has been using their money to finance his political ambitions. Mark discovers that Abigail has been having an affair with UCLA professor Ron Sperling.

Their confrontation reveals how unhappy and disconnected they have become.

But instead of ending their marriage, the couple slowly begins to understand each other more clearly.

Mark admits how deeply he wants political success and how much he still wants Abigail in his life.

Abigail recognises his vulnerability and decides to stand beside him.

By the end, their relationship is stronger in one sense, but it is not necessarily healthier or more honest towards the outside world.

They now know each other’s flaws and secrets. Instead of allowing those truths to destroy their relationship, they choose to present a united front.

Abigail supports Mark as he builds his political future around a false version of the kidnapping.

Their marriage survives, but it also becomes part of the deception.

Who Were the Kidnappers in Animals?

The film never fully reveals the identities or backgrounds of the three kidnappers.

Their rabbit masks create a disturbing visual image, but the story does not provide a detailed explanation of who they are or why they selected the Kimball household.

The biggest revelation is that they mistakenly kidnapped Hector instead of Denny.

Although the criminals drive the action, their personal identities are ultimately less important than the choices made by Mark and the other characters.

The film’s central mystery is not simply who organised the kidnapping.

It is what the kidnapping reveals about the people caught in the crisis.

Animals Ending Explained: What Does the Final Scene Mean?

The final interview is where the film’s message becomes especially clear.

Mark is being celebrated as a hero for supposedly killing the kidnapper and saving Hector.

When Gayle King asks what went through his mind during the confrontation, Mark confidently explains that he understood what needed to be done.

But the film connects his answer with the memory of Dayle’s death.

This creates a disturbing double meaning.

To the public, Mark appears to be describing a moment of bravery in which he saved a child’s life.

For viewers who know the truth, his words also reflect how easily he abandoned a dying woman and used the situation to protect himself.

The ending suggests that Mark has become increasingly comfortable with morally questionable decisions.

He does not need to convince himself that everything he did was right. He only needs to persuade everyone else.

And with his political career flourishing, he has succeeded.

What Is the Real Meaning Behind Animals?

At its heart, Animals explores what people become when their comfortable lives are threatened.

Mark begins as a polished political candidate whose public image is built around success and leadership. But when faced with a crisis, he repeatedly chooses the option that best protects his interests.

Ramon, meanwhile, has none of Mark’s advantages. Yet his love for Hector drives him to act when others hesitate.

The film uses their contrasting circumstances to examine how society distributes power, sympathy and recognition.

It also raises an uncomfortable question: Would Mark have made the same decisions if the kidnapped child had actually been his biological son?

His response after discovering Hector’s identity makes that question especially important.

The film’s title, Animals, can be understood as a reference to the instinctive behaviour that emerges when people are driven by fear, ambition, love or survival.

Some characters respond with compassion and courage. Others become calculating and ruthless.

The difference is not simply who appears respectable or powerful. It is what people choose to do when their true priorities are exposed.

Is Animals’ Ending Happy or Sad?

The ending is deliberately bittersweet.

Hector survives and is reunited with his father. Ramon succeeds in protecting his family, while Mark and Abigail manage to repair their damaged relationship.

But justice remains incomplete.

Ramon, the real hero, leaves the United States. Dayle dies, the kidnappers are killed, and Mark escapes serious punishment while gaining political power.

Instead of being exposed, Mark becomes even more successful.

That contradiction is what makes the conclusion unsettling.

Ultimately, Animals ends with the wrong man being celebrated as a hero. Ramon saves lives, but Mark controls the story. The film leaves viewers with a troubling idea: sometimes power is not about doing the right thing, but about having enough influence to decide what everyone else believes happened.
