While Shashikala was missing her martyr brother on the most special day of her life, she hardly knew that her brother from heaven will make sure that her wedding turns out to be a special one.

In 2017, Commando Jyoti Prakash Nirala lost his life while fighting militants in Jammu and Kashmir. Though he had gunned down the nephew of Lashkar commander Lakhvi who lives in Pakistan, he died saving lives of his injured fellow commandos.

The martyred commando was awarded the Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award on Republic Day 2018 for his brave and courageous act.

Being the only son of his parents, Jyoti had three sisters. His father Tej Narayan Singh is a marginal farmer who belongs to a small village in Bihar.

When Jyoti’s father sent the wedding invite of his third daughter to Air Chief Marshall and the Garud Commando Unit, he hardly knew that they would do something magical.

The whole family was surprised by the arrival of 50 commandos. They not only contributed Rs 5 lakh for the wedding but also performed the rituals of the marriage – such as Merava, Lava Chhatra, Dharayee and more, that the martyred commando would have performed.

The bride, Shashikala, said her brothers had come from all across the country.

The parents spoke to Hindustan Times, and expressed their happiness as they felt they got 50 sons.

“We lost one son, but got 50 sons today. These sons filled us with love and respect and assured us that we are not alone and helpless. Today, the entire nation is with us. God bless you, my children.”

This heartwarming gesture by these 50 commandoes has not only touched our heart but also made us question yourselves:

Why we tend to forget the contribution of our real heroes?

How many times do we remember the family of martyr soldiers?

How many times did we step forward to support the parents who lost their son to keep us safe?
