Woman Cop In Assam Forced To Bring Baby To Work As Maternity Leave Extension Denied

In a heartbreaking incident, Sanchita Rani Roy, a police constable in Assam, has to carry her seven-month-old child to work every day.  Every day, this 27-year-old constable reports to the police station at 10.30 am with her baby, completes her work, and goes back home.

As Sanchita Roy’s maternity leave extension request wasn’t granted, she is left with no other choice but to bring her child with her to the police station.

While opening up about her helpless condition, Sanchita said “I have no one at home to take care of my baby so I am forced to bring her along with me.” The constable is deputed in the Silchar PI Court in Cachar district.

As Roy’s husband works for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as a jawan, he is currently posted out of Assam. She has noted how her colleagues are extremely supportive of her and help her with the baby at work.

Though the woman police constable has been lauded for her dedication, it is heartbreaking how circumstances have forced Sanchita to bring her child with her.

Speaking to reporters, Roy added that she has applied for further leaves. But until then she “will continue (her) duty this way.” Sanchita’s condition is just another sad reminder of what working mothers with newborn babies face in the country. We hope authorities would come forward and help Sanchita in striking a balance between motherhood and work.
