Mental Illness is one of the toughest illness.
But since we can’t see mental illness, we tend to ignore it or think it isn’t real. While thousands are losing their lives to this illness, it still a taboo across the world.
What makes it worse if the attitude of those who don’t understand the mental health, makes it even worse for our dear and near ones to cope up with one of the most deadly illness.
Recently many people suffering from mental illness came forward on Reddit to share the most stupid thing others said to them because of their mental illness.
Some of the responses will not only break your heart but also make you wonder how much we all need to know about mental illness.

To this, one of the people suffering from mental illness also shared:
“This is everyone’s all time favorite line to use. The feeling of defeat anytime I’ve heard it, sucks. I wish it were as simple as “not thinking about it” “
#2
Another person suffering from mental illness also shared how it feels when people rather than understanding the mental illness, say that other people have worse problems:
” It just makes me feel stupid, like my problems when they aren’t under the lens of depression aren’t very significant yet my depression makes me feel terrible regardless so they are very large issues for me so idk (i don’t know) “
” It was that thought process that made my depression worse, it really sucks when you’re being mentally tormented and people tell you “oh well it could be worse! At least you have etc etc…” “

To this, another survivor shared:
The best way to answer is as follows Person – “No one likes to be around a depressed person.” Me – “And neither do I. That’s my problem, dipshit.”

Another mental illness survivor shared:
“I was joking & laughing with friends & family the very same day (well in the evening) I had found both my dogs dead. I was dying inside but didn’t want people to feel bad for me/break down in front of people/cry. It’s amazing how easy acting “ok” when you’re really not is.”

Another mental illness survivor shared:
“Why pay to see a therapist when you can talk to your family about it?”
You mean the same family that will immediately tell everyone else what I just told them? I think I’ll stick with an unbiased 3rd party who legally can’t tell anyone what I just said.

To which, one survivor shared a beautiful response:
If you’re not allowed to be depressed because others have it worse than you, than you’re not allowed to be happy because others have it better than you.” – my awesome therapist (possibly quoting somebody else, but I like it!)

Another person shared the best response to it:
“My go to response to this: “so is a brain tumor”.”

Aren’t these posts hurtful, sad and disheartening?
While they struggle alone, people with mental illness have been blamed to be lazy, dramatic or pessimist. Rather than recognizing their mental illness, their friends and families have told them that it’s not real and it’s only in their head.
At I FOR HER, with the help of our dedicated community members, we are not only breaking the stigma around mental health but also helping women, mothers, wives, and children to seek the required community support.
