Best Therapist Advice Ever: 15 People Shared Therapist’s Advice That Helped Them Fight Life’s Darkest Times

by IForHer Team
June 3, 2019

At some point in our lives, we face stressful times that shake us to our core. It could be a devastating loss or an emotional trauma that makes life too much to handle.

These 15 people underwent similar situations but their therapist saved them from drowning in their own negative thoughts or trauma.

If you or your dear one undergoing similar helpless situation, then this Reddit thread on ‘what is the best advice you’ve gotten from a therapist?’ comprised of some brilliant insights could be helpful.

Please note this article in no way attempts to replace actual therapy. If you’re feeling suicidal/depressed, please consult mental health practitioner at the earliest.

#1: Finding It Difficult To ‘Move On’

The idea is not to ‘move on’ but to ‘move forward’

#2: Scared Of Embarrassments Or Failures?

Name as many embarrassing moments for someone else as you can in a minute. You probably can’t think of much. This is how people view your embarrassing moments.

#3: Frustrated As You Think Too Much About People?

#4: When It Feels Life Is Out Of Your Control?

Life is happening for you, not to you…

#5: Tired Of Blaming Or Criticizing Yourself?

Have you thought about forgiving yourself?

#6: Harassed By Your Own Negative Thoughts?

Imagine you are standing at a train platform and unhelpful thoughts are the trains that pass, you don’t need to get on every train, acknowledge them and let them pass.

#7: Lost Confidence In Your Own Self?

As long as you’re still breathing, there’s time to change.

#8: How To Stop Sabotaging Your Own Self?

There are two voices in your head - one that helps you and one that hinders you. Whenever you have a sabotaging thought, ask yourself ‘Who is saying that right now?

#9: How To Control Your Thoughts?

The monster you feed is the one that thrives.

#10: Your Own Thoughts Make You Sad & Depressed?

Try radical acceptance. Accept that this is how you feel and that these are your thoughts. If you don’t, then you are trapped in it, rather than letting it flow through you.

#11: Stop Yourself From Crying?

If crying really is your only option, it’s okay to do it.

#12: Feel Too Stressed About Your To Do List?

Instead of ‘I have to get this done’, say ‘I would like to get this done’. It takes the pressure off.

#13: When Your Own Mind Becomes Your Enemy?

Think about what’s most likely to happen instead of what’s the worst thing that could happen.

#14: When You Want To Give Up On Life?

It doesn’t sound to me like you really want to die, you just don’t want to suffer. That is a perfectly human reaction to not want to suffer, so let’s work on some ways to minimise that.

#15: When You Are Disappointed In People?

Harbouring a grudge is like drinking poison every day and expecting it to make your enemy sick.
