Our modern society is battling with depression and this struggle has become more and more prominent in recent times.
Though we see happy and excited faces on social media posting pictures of their fairytale love or their achievements, hardly we know the demons they are fighting within their minds.
Bhumika Singh’s story is one such story where a beautiful soul who fought hard against the demons but finally gave up.
Bhumika, a 33-year-old advertising professional, hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Mumbai’s Santacruz east on Monday (December 17).
She took this extreme step when her husband Vinay, who also works at an international ad firm in Khar, was out at work. When Vinay came back from office, he found his wife’s body hanging from a ceiling fan. He called the building watchman immediately to help him to take her to hospital.
Though she was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, she was declared brought dead.
As per the police, the suicide note mentioned that she was in depression and therefore committed suicide. And, no one should be held responsible for her death.Â
Hence, police have ruled out any foul play behind her suicide.
She also requested in her suicide note to give her ATM pin number and bank account details to her father as his financial condition is very poor.
If you feel depression is still uncommon then it is very important for you to know that:Â
As per WHO, around 57 million people in India, are suffering from depression. And, this number is nearly 18% of the global estimate.Â
While most impacted people in India would shy away from admitting that they are suffering from depression, many others remain unaware of it.
There are many of us who mistake depression with sadness or pessimism and call it just a “low point” in life.
If depression is prolonged and left undiagnosed and untreated, it may lead to extreme sadness, guilt or loss of interest, ultimately leading to suicide as well.
Depression is one of the leading causes of suicides in India (according to a study published in the medical journal The Lancet.)
As shared by Dr. Tank with Indian Express, some of the most common signs that a person having a suicidal tendency might show are:
#1 Consistent low mood with loss of interest in activities that one previously enjoyed
#2 Withdrawal into self
#3 Feelings of hopelessness, guilt and worthlessness
#4 Possible substance use
#5 Talk about harming oneself
*These are not an exhaustive list of signs of depression. They are just some of the many early signs of depression.
If you know anyone who is struggling with these signs, we suggest you talk to the person immediately. And help her/him get medical help.
It is important that we break the stigma related to mental problems before this silent killer takes any more innocent lives.
