While Bollywood restores to formula filmmaking, there are a few makers who showed the courage to give us movies that were outstanding. These brilliant movies didn’t attempt to fit in with the other Bollywood movies; rather they chose to stand out. With amazing storylines and plot twists, these movies kept us hooked till the end. And, thankfully their memorable endings didn’t disappoint us at all.
So, here are some of the great Bollywood movies that gave us a memorable ‘the end’ that we continue to think about!
1. Udaan (2010)
This brilliant movie makes you think the entire time that its focus is Rohan and his relationship with his abusive father. But, in the end, it leaves us surprised when we are awakened to a completely different reality. The movie was more about how Rohan attempts to save his own step-brother from their father. The beautifully done scene, where Rohan and Arjun could be seen hand-in-hand shows their perfect ‘udaan’ to a better life.
2. Masaan (2015)
Masaan is an offbeat movie that Bollywood should definitely be proud of. The movie ends with a new beginning as Devi (Richa Chadha) Devi and Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), who suffered immensely, end up together on a boat swirling away in the Ganga. In the end, Deepak places a water bottle next to crying Devi without uttering a word. Post which, the two start a conversation as the sun sets or rises? We’ll never know as makers left it our imagination!
3. Haider (2014)
No one can deny that Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider was a hard-hitting movie. But, what makes this movie extra-special is the great ending. With the powerful final words – “inteqaam se sirf inteqaam paida hota hai” (revenge begets revenge), Haider chooses the path to mercy and leaves his uncle half-dead in the snow. What an exceptional ending!
4. Andhadhun (2018)
One of our all-time favorite Andhadhun has a great ending. In the last scene of this super-hit movie, a blind Ayushmann Khurrana kicks a can out of his way with his support stick. In the moment, it hits you hard that Ayushmann’s character isn’t blind and he could see. But, then you are left with so many questions like at what point did his vision return or was he ever blind? This brilliant ending is open to interpretation and some of the questions haunt us even today.
5. Kahaani (2012)
Vidya Balan’s brilliant thriller is one of the most intelligent movies ever made. The ending leaves many shocked with the revelation that Vidya Balan was actually never pregnant. This brilliant ending and the power-packed performance makes you go back and watch this movie again and again.
6. Queen (2013)
Kangana Ranaut’s Queen is an unforgettable movie. Being the best lesson on self-love, this movie showcases a beautiful journey of a woman falling in love with her own self. Though the film is beautiful, it is the ending that is supremely empowering. After rejecting Rajkummar Rao’s character with no attitude, Rani’s final walk to a better life is the perfect ending we could have asked for.
7. A Wednesday (2008)
A Wednesday is another movie that Bollywood should be proud of. This off-beat movie is power-packed with great performances. But, what makes it even more special is its ending. Naseeruddin Shah’s final act of revelation and the choice of leaving the character unnamed, depriving him of any religion associated with his name-tag; and the hacker, who has been trying to figure out Shah’s locationm being so impressed after his speech that he tries to conceal the information from Anupam Kher – the ending of this movie is absolutely brilliant. It showcases the truest form of human nature.
8. The Lunchbox (2013)
Many of us, who have fallen in love with this extraordinary movie, wondered what would have happened if Irrfan’s Saajan ended up happily ever after with Nimrat Kaur’s Ila. Though the makers left the ending to our imagination, it still leaves us with hope and thoughts on how all of us deserve a second chance at love.
Don’t these movies have the most impactful ending? Do let us know!
