Recently, Bollywood has been criticized for making endless remakes of south movies. From Drishyam to Tere Naam, there are many Bollywood blockbusters that are copies of South movies. But, while many blame Bollywood for making copies, there are Bollywood movies that were remade by the South Film industries with additional flavor and nuances.
Here 8 Bollywood movies that South Film industries remade because inspiration flows from both sides
1. Pink | Tamil Remake: Nerkonda Paarvai
Pink, the movie, broke norms in different ways as it attempted to showcase the importance of consent to Indian society. The engaging movie became a commercial and critical hit for all the right reasons. And, Deepak Sehgal’s closing speech and, the famous dialogue on consent about ‘No’ being a complete sentence, irrespective of who says it, touched so many hearts! The movie’s Tamil remake has Ajith, who played the character played by Amitabh Bachchan.
2. Khosla Ka Ghosla | Tamil Remake: Poi Solla Porom
Khosla Ka Ghosla is one of the most hilarious movies of all time. With a power-packed performance and the relatable portrayal of an average middle-class person, this movie managed to be funny and real at the same time. This movie is about a Delhi-based retired middle-class man (played by Anupam Kher), who tries half-heartedly to get his land back from a swindling property dealer with the help of his sons and their friends. It is a wholesome movie that you can enjoy with your family. This movie deserved to be remade!
3. Delhi Belly | Tamil Remake: Settai
This dark comedy gained the status of a cult movie and was widely appreciated. Three unsuspecting, average guys find themselves on the hit list of one of India’s most powerful crime syndicates. It isn’t always that a heist comedy manages to deliver on topics like romance, friendship, and the dark side of smuggling. But Delhi Belly was an exception, along with its ‘out-of-the-box’ soundtrack. This movie was later remade in Tamil.
4. Pyaar Ka Punchnama | Telugu Remake: Green Signal
The misogynistic Pyaar Ka Punchnama, which was liked by many was remade in Telugu as Green Signal.
5. A Wednesday | Tamil Remake: Unnaipol Oruvan | Telugu Remake: Eenadu
With the hard-hitting performance of Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, and Jimmy Shergill, this movie is Bollywood’s finest work. Given the performance at the box office, this movie was remade both in Tamil and Telugu.
6. Jolly LLB | Tamil Remake: Manithan
Jolly LLB received so much love from the audience for all the right reasons. From hard-hitting performances to a gripping story to an amazing script, this movie had everything that a movie needs to succeed at the box office. With talented actors like Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, and Saurabh Shukla, this movie did fantastic business at the box office. Given the popularity of the movie, it was remade in Tamil.
7. 3 Idiots | Tamil Remake: Nanban
3 idiots – is one of the most successful movies of Bollywood. With an IMDB rating of 8.4, 3 Idiots is one of the highest-rated Bollywood movies of all time. Given the success it achieved, 3 idiots was remade in Tamil.
8. Kahani | Telugu Remake: Anaamika
With talented actors like Vidya Balan, Saswata Chatterjee, and Parambrata Chatterjee, this movie is wickedly smart. Kahaani beautifully integrates the chaos of Kolkata with the narrative, keeping the audience on its toes. It was one of the first films with a female lead actor to gross more than 100 crores at the box office. Given the success of Kahani, it was remade in Telugu as well. Blending the cultural nuances of Hyderabad, this movie starred Nayanthara in the lead role.
