Being a movie lover, every time Bollywood disappoints us by delivering shit products, my heart breaks a bit. But, when it delivered ridiculously hyped and overly marketed movies in 2020, it affected me way much more!
Because 2020 was the year that made us realize how it is important for any country to spend money on the right causes like healthcare. In the year when many struggled to afford health treatments in hospitals Bollywood, one of the leading industries, was busy wasting money on some really ridiculous movies. The movies that neither added to the industry financially nor added any value to society.
I wished rather than wasting money in making these ridiculous movies or spending money on their marketing, Bollywood should have put that money to better use. They could have donated it to their lowly paid workforce, who were extremely hit by lockdown, or by simply donating it to charities or hospitals so that thousands of poor could have availed the medical support that they couldn’t.
Now just to give you a quick idea, here’s a list of 7 ridiculous movies that were released in 2020 that we could have done without.
1. Sadak 2 (IMDB rating: 1.1)
An ideal example of how makers can’t serve anything relevant to the Indian audience anymore. Even with the most popular Bollywood actors like Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, and Aditya Roy Kapoor, the movie just collapsed at the box office. The movie was a disaster because it lacked everything – poor screenplay, unengaging script, and lack of direction!
While Sanjay Dutt did justice to his role, Alia Bhatt wasn’t as impressive as we expected her to be! We still don’t get why Aditya Roy Kapoor was there in the movie. This 2 hours 14 minutes long movie is a complete waste of time. Btw, the movie currently remains the worst-rated Bollywood movie of all time on IMDB.
Budget: INR 40 Crores (Source)
2. Coolie No. 1 (IMDB rating: 1.3)
While coolie no. 1 reminds us of Govinda’s great acting, this remake wasn’t even close to its original version. Makers need to understand that fancy locations and costumes aren’t the only things that make a movie. Seriously, another movie that was not at all required!
Budget: INR 35-40 Crores (Source)
3. Indoo Ki Jawaani (IMDB Rating: 1.4)
“Logic is often sacrificed at the altar of comedy and entertainment, but the problem with writer-director Abir Sengupta’s story is that it’s highly preposterous and profoundly silly.” – Ronak Kotecha, TNN
This TOI review has very aptly summarized what ‘Indoo ki Jawaani’ is all about. This movie is so focused on mining laughs from the girl’s awkward attempts to lose her virginity, that it leaves you highly disappointed.
Budget: INR 9-10 Crores (Source)
4. Baaghi 3 (IMDB rating: 2.1)
Let’s agree that Baaghi 3 had nothing new to impress the audience and the critics. With a pretty similar storyline to Baaghi 1 & Baaghi 2, there was hardly anything to watch in this movie! Wish someone could have told the makers that a great physique doesn’t make a movie good! Acting, Screenplay, Dialogue do!
Budget: INR 55 Crores (Source)
5. Laxmii (IMDB rating: 2.3)
The Akshay Kumar starrer grabbed everyone’s attention right after the release of the trailer. However, the movie failed to impress the audience. In short, the Indian Express reviewed the movie and reviewed it bang on: “Akshay Kumar film is nonstop nonsense”
Budget: INR 60 Crores (Source)
6. Khaali Peeli (IMDB rating: 2.4)
Do we really need to tell you, why we didn’t need this movie! From the problematic song to the awful acting skills of Ananya Pandey and Ishaan Khattar, there is hardly anything that doesn’t disappoint the audience. Another movie that we could have done without!
Budget: INR 10-12 Crores (Source)
7. Love Aaj Kal 2 (IMDB rating: 5)
Felt like makers spent more time creating unnecessary hype about the relationship of Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aryan than working on the movie. Maybe that’s the reason why this movie feels like torture and a sheer waste of time and money!
Budget: INR 52 Crores (Source)
Let’s hope 2021 is less disappointing than 2020, and Bollywood makes some smart decisions! Hope it doesn’t disappoint movie lovers like me and would give us movies that add value to our society and world.
A humble request: Dear movies makers, if you don’t have good scripts then please don’t waste crores of rupees on stupid movies. Because times have changed. Today’s audience is smarter and has no hesitance in calling out your sub-standard movies! Let’s put the money to the right use, please!
