No one can deny that Bollywood has lost its charm in recent times. From regressive and sexist movies to remakes, Bollywood has given us fewer and fewer iconic movies in recent times. The quality of movies has really deteriorated, especially comedy movies. It is sad to say that Bollywood, which came up with some really memorable comedy movies in the 2000s is struggling to woo the audience and make them laugh.
From Khosla Ka Ghosla to Bheja Fry, Bollywood has given some gems that we don’t mind watching again and again. Here’s looking back at the comedy movies that were Bollywood’s finest work:
Bollywood’s Best Comedies From the 2000s
1. Khosla Ka Ghosla
Khosla Ka Ghosla is one of the most hilarious movies of all time. With a power-packed performance and the relatable portrayal of an average middle-class person, this movie managed to be funny and real at the same time. This movie is about a Delhi-based retired middle-class man (played by Anupam Kher), who tries half-heartedly to get his land back from a swindling property dealer with the help of his sons and their friends. It is a wholesome movie that you can enjoy with your family.
2. Oye Lucky Lucky Oye
No one can deny that Abhay Deol is one of the finest actors in Bollywood. Like many of his other movies, this movie is also a great watch. Starting as a petty thief, how Lucky Singh rises to become one of the city’s biggest operators and carves out the kind of lifestyle he’d once only dreamed of. The entire movie is just straight-up brilliant.
3. Bheja Fry
With the power-packed performance of Vinay Pathak, this small-budget movie did wonders back in 2007. In case you are in the mood for a refreshing comedy, this underrated movie is a must-watch!
4. Hungama
The story of a bunch of misfits whose misconceptions about each other’s backgrounds end up in a series of chaotic, yet comic outcomes. With loads of chaos, miscommunication, and confusion, this Priyadarshan movie is a perfect example of what a good entertainer looks like.
5. Hera Pheri
Hera Pheri is another Priyadarshan masterpiece that made it to our list of finest Bollywood comedy movies. Three unemployed men find the answer to all their money problems when they receive a call from a kidnapper. However, things do not go as planned.
6. Ek Chalis Ki Last Local
This underrated comic thriller stars Abhay Deol opposite Neha Dhupia in lead roles. This movie revolves around two people who miss the last local train at 1:40 am and how missing their train changes their course of lives forever. This movie may not have received a great commercial response, but it did receive a positive critical response. The movie has been referred to as a cult classic in Bollywood cinema.
7. Maalamaal Weekly
This movie is another gem by Priyadarshan. A lottery vendor learns that a jackpot-winning ticket was sold in his store. Chaos ensues when he discovers that the winner is missing and most likely dead. Now, he wants all the money, and so does everyone around him.
8. Bhool Bhulaiya
The psychological horror comedy film starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Ameesha Patel is a must-watch. This movie is about an NRI and his wife, who decide to stay in his ancestral home, paying no heed to the warnings about ghosts. Soon, inexplicable occurrences cause him to call a psychiatrist to help solve the mystery.
We hope these kinds of wholesome comedies would soon come back. Dear Bollywood, can you please make better comedy movies?
