But, there have been some really talented Bollywood actresses who have managed to break the path and impressed the audience with an unconventional roles with grey shade.
Here are the times when Bollywood actresses made bold choices and left us impressed with their negative roles:
1. Priyanka Chopra in Aitraaz
While she has given us many memorable characters in her career, we still adore her negative character in Aitraaz. Her outstanding portrayal of the sizzling dominating boss in the movie Aitraaz is unforgettable. It is quite amazing how Priyanka Chopra made a brave decision to play a negative role in her initial career days. But, her brave decision paid off. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role, in 2004.
2. Kangana Ranaut in Krrish 3
If we speak of rebels in Bollywood, one name that would pop up in everyone’s head is Kangana Ranaut. While she aced positive roles like Queen, Manikarnika, she did equal justice to her dark character. As Kaya in Krrish 3, she left everyone quite impressed.
3. Urmila Matondkar in Pyar Tune Kya Kiya
One of the most underrated actresses of all time, Urmila Matondkar left everyone impressed with her portrayal of negative characters. Be it her negative character in Pyar Tune Kya Kiya or Kaun, Urmila proved her mettle as an actor.
4. Kajol in Gupt
Kajol’s unparallel talent made Gupt, one of the most loved thrillers of the ’90s. Her role as a psychotic lover in the movie Gupt was so outstanding that it got her Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role, in 1997.
5. Seema Pahwa in Gangubai Kathiawadi
There is no doubt that Bollywood has typecast Seema Pahwa as a mother. Her role in movies like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Bala, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, and Badhaai Do received a lot of love. But, her portrayal of a negative character in Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi was outstanding. We hope she will get more opportunities to play roles with gray shade.
6. Vidya Balan in Ishqiya
There is no doubt that Vidya Balan is one of the most talented Bollywood actresses of all time. And, with Ishqiya she just once again proved her mettle as an actor.
7. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Khakee & Dhoom 2
Though Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is quite popular for her roles in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, she left the audience equally impressed with her negative characters. With her dark roles in Khakee and Dhoom 2, Aishwarya Rai showed the world her versatility as an actor and shut down all those who called her just a pretty face.
8. Bipasha Basu in Jism & Raaz 3
Bipasha proved her versatility in many different kinds of roles. And, her grey role in the film Jism (2003) made us fall in love with her. She left everyone impressed once again when she became a villain in Raaz 3 of 2009.

One actress that never left her fans disappointed with her characters is Tabu. And, when it comes to negative portrayal, Tabu has left critics and audiences equally impressed. Her role as Nimmi in Maqbool, co-starring Irrfan Khan in lead, was quite outstanding.

Famous for her popular talk show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Simi has delivered many blockbusters. But her performance in Karz (1980) as Kamini Verma stands out. She even won a Filmfare nomination for the same.
11. Taapsee Pannu in Badla
For her outstanding portrayal of a negative character in Badla, Taapsee Pannu won three best actress awards for the film at IIFA, Screen, and Zee Cine Awards. Her portrayal of a shrewd and selfish murderer was unbelievable and impressive.
12. Konkona Sen Sharma in Ek Thi Daayan
As a deadly witch, Konkana Sen Sharma’s performance in the movie Ek Thi Daayan was indeed outstanding. Though the movie miserably bombed at the box office, Konkona didn’t fail to impress her fans.
