Dil Chahta Hai gave us really well-written characters, hilarious jokes, the bond of friendship, and a memorable road trip. While we appreciate the fact that the movie touched upon so many aspects of life, the movie also gave us a supporting character who, for years, has been mocked and ridiculed rather than loved.
We are talking about the character of ‘time-table’ aka Subodh (Asad Dadarkar). This character deserved our love rather than the mockery and ridicule!
Subodh: A Progressive BoyfriendÂ
Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) joined Pooja and her boyfriend Subodh on their lunch date and drives. The fact that Subodh never objected that the dates were being interrupted by Pooja’s friend show he was definitely a progressive man.
In early 2000s movies, it was so rare to see a male character, who accept his girlfriend’s guy friend? Not only Subodh was a progressive, but also an emotionally secure and confident person!
Sameer’s Biased Point Of View About Subodh
The movie introduces Subodh to us from Sameer’s point of view. Now given Sameer’s love interest in Pooja, we feel his description of Subodh was a biased point of view. So, if you view Subodh, independently of Sameer’s love story, you’d realize that Subodh is a pretty nice guy. Out of jealousy, Sameer calls Subodh a crazy person for being a loving and caring boyfriend.
Subodh: An Expressive Lover
Unlike many men, he wasn’t shy about expressing his love for Pooja. He even cared about the tiny details that may bring happiness to Pooja – like buying her a balloon every day. Another indicator of how Subodh was an amazing boyfriend lies in the fact that he planned beautiful dates for Pooja. Though it may seem monotonous, at least he always made time for Pooja.
Subodh: A Really Good Human BeingÂ
While Sameer tried so many tricks to win over Pooja, Subodh just won her through his actions (and great memory). While Sameer was so jealous of Subodh, Subodh didn’t even have a cinch of jealousy towards Sameer. While makers might have treated the character of Subodh for comic relief, no one could deny that Subodh was a pretty amazing boyfriend and a really good human being. Subodh was neither insecure about himself nor required any external validation. Even Sameer’s obvious attempt at cracking a joke on him was met with a straightforward answer.
Just because he was a disciplined man who valued time, shouldn’t be the reason why he should be mocked and ridiculed.
Though it’s been a long time since the movie was released. But, we still think it’s time to celebrate Subodh for being a progressive and loving boyfriend and stop seeing him through Sameer’s jealous perspective.
