Many would agree that our current TV shows have lost the charm and progressiveness of yesteryears. While we had progressive shows like Shanti and Aarohan, now we have shows like Naagin and Sasural Simar Ka. But, in midst of disappointing TV shows, there is one show – Anupamaa – that still manages to initiate a progressive conversation about taboo topics –domestic violence, divorce, sexism, or remarriage!
In fact, its most recent episode has stirred up quite the conversation among netizens. Finally, after setting the plot for weeks, Anupamaa (Rupali Ganguly) and Anuj Kapadia (Gaurav Khanna) are all set to be married. Anupamaa publicly accepted Anuj’s proposal.
The reason behind the internet showering love over the show is how Anupamaa handled her family’s disapproval over her decision to remarry.
In a society, where women are shamed for second marriage, Anupamaa taking a stand for her decision to get married to Anuj is quite inspiring. And, the journey for Anupamma to finally say ‘yes’ has not been an easy journey. Her mother-in-law, Leela Shah (played by Alpana Buch) has been a strong opposer to the idea.
The series has attempted to address the taboo of second marriages in our society by showing this face-off between Anupamaa and her family. But, Anupamma’s stand on the importance of women having the right to make their own life decisions has left the internet applauding!
Rather than letting others control her life decision, Anupamaa has finally taken the reins of her life into her own hands. It is inspiring to have a role model like Anupamma in a society, where women are constantly discouraged from remarriage.
Many people on the internet came forward to celebrate Anupamaa for taking a stand in the situation like an absolute boss.

We need more such progressive shows that initiate the discussions about regressive norms and bring social change!
