After 25 years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, many of us realized how Karan Johar’s super-hit classic is not about love. Rather, it’s about toxic people working really hard to ruin each other’s lives. The movie that was hailed as one of the finest movies in the past is not just sexist, but also toxic and misogynist.
Be it Tina, Rahul, or Anjali, every character has so many red flags, that you couldn’t stop yourself from labeling Kuch Kuch Hota Hai as a saga of toxicity! From Tina ruining her 6-year-old daughter’s childhood to Rahul being a toxic friend to Anjali using Aman as a backup – this movie has so many issues that you can’t ignore.
But, before you read any further, here is a much-needed disclaimer. Like many of you, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was one of our favorite movies too. But, this post may ruin the movie for you forever! So, please read it at your own risk.
1. Tina Ruining Her 8-year-old Daughter’s Childhood Because Of Her Own Guilt
An 8-year-old child has been given the responsibility to make two grown-up adults fall in love. What was Tina thinking? Dear Tina, we understand your guilt when you realized that you came between Anjali & Rahul. But why burden an eight-year-old child, with the responsibility of reuniting her man-child father with his best friend? Why ruin her childhood?
2. Rahul & His Toxicity
Rahul was the worst friend one could ask for! Even though he was Anjali’s Best Friend, still he was the first to ruthlessly laugh at her in public.
But, what was even more problematic was his screwed-up definition of love and marriage. He was one of those shallow people, who fell in love with clothes and appearances and not with the person.
How he literally waited till Anjali’s wedding day to express his love is just a reminder of how wrecked he was.
3. Rahul: A Creepy Father
Not just toxic or sexist, Rahul was a creepy father too. It was quite heartbreaking how he shamelessly burdened his eight-year-old daughter with the responsibilities of a wife. How could we forget the problematic dialogue: “Main aapki beti hoon biwi nahin (I am your daughter, not your wife),” to which he replies, “Agar main papa aur mummy dono ho sakta hoon, toh kya… (If I can be your mom and dad both, can’t you be my…)”
4. Malhotra, Being A Sexist Principal
How could one forget Principal Malhotra’s sexist comments on how he’ll complain to the mothers of girl students, that they are trying to ‘excite’ boys with their short skirts! And, what is even worse is his double standards when it comes to Mrs. Briganza.
5. Anjali using Aman as a backup
Anjali was toxic to Aman, who was loving, kind, and caring. She broke Aman’s heart for a jerk like Rahul. It is quite disturbing how she chose Rahul over Aman, who was definitely a better human, friend, and life partner! Why Lady? Why?
