In recent times, while Bollywood was struggling at the box office, many South Indian movies have made huge profits. And, to end the slump at the box office, Bollywood is planning to seek inspiration from southern filmmakers. In 2023, we will be witnessing a massive trend of south film remakes.
Though the recent remakes – Jersey, Vikram Vedha, Mili, Shehzaada, and Selfiee – bombed miserably at the box office, there are still many south remakes that are lined up. And, Bollywood has big hopes for them to work.
Here are some of the most anticipated remakes of South movies remakes that Bollywood will release in 2023:
1. Original: Kaithi [Tamil] | Remake: Bholaa
Bholaa is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller directed by Ajay Devgn and produced by Ajay Devgn Films, Reliance Entertainment, T-Series Films, and Dream Warrior Pictures. The movie is a remake of the 2019 Tamil action-thriller ‘Kaithi’, starring Karthik. With an IMDb rating of 8.5, Kaithi was a huge box-office success and received much love from critics and the audience.
Recently, Bollywood remake, Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa was released in theatres. Along with Ajay Devgn, Tabu also stars in this remake. As per the sources, the story revolves around an ex-convict, who after being released from jail, looks for his daughter. However, his attempts are interrupted. 2. Original: Anniyan (Tamil) | Remake: Aparichit
Starring Vikram and Sadha in lead roles, Anniyan, is an action drama revolving around a man who suffers from multiple personality disorder. The movie was released in 2005 and became a huge commercial success across South India. The movie is rated 8.3 on IMDb.
In addition to winning a record-breaking eight Filmfare Awards and six State Film Awards, the film also won a National Award in the Special Effects category. The remake will be helmed by Shankar with Ranveer Singh in lead.
3. Original: Thadam (Tamil) | Remake: Gumraah
With Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur, Gumraah is the Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil hit Thadam, which featured Arun Vijay and Vidya Pradeep. With IMDb rating of 8.2, the movie turned out to be a commercial success.
As per the plot, the movie revolves around a murder investigation. During the investigation of a murder, the police find two probable suspects. These suspects look alike but do not know each other. However, the case gets complicated as new facts unravel.
4. Original: Soorarai Pottru | Remake: Yet To Be Titled
Suriya starrer Soorarai Pottru was a pandemic release. And, it was directly released on OTT. Directed by Sudha Kongara, Soorarai Pottru is a biopic drama about the rise of a businessman who strives hard to create his own airline service for people with low budgets.
With an IMDb rating of 8.7, the movie managed to win the hearts of many. Recently, the remake of the Tamil film Soorai Pottru was announced. With Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madaan in the lead, the film will be directed by Sudha Kongara, who helmed the original.
5. Original: Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru or D-16 | Remake Sanki
D-16 is a 2016 neo-noir crime thriller. The movie went on to gain positive reviews from film critics as well becoming a sleeper hit and blockbuster. The movie is rated 8.2 on IMDb.
Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the remake of the superhit south crime thriller D-16, Sanki will star Varun Dhawan in the lead role of Rahman. Tentatively titled Sanki, this movie will also star Parineeti Chopra. The movie is about a police officer, who retires after an accident during a case investigation.
6. Original: The Great Indian Kitchen |Remake: Yet to be titled
Critically acclaimed Malayalam movie The Great Indian Kitchen will be remade in Hindi. Sanya Malhotra confirmed the news on her Instagram page. “So happy and excited to be a part of #TheGreatIndianKitchenHindiRemake can’t wait! (sic),” she wrote on her social media handle.
7. Original: Veeram | Remake: Kisi Ka Bhai.. Kisi Ki Jaan
As per NDTV, Salman Khan’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai.. Kisi Ki Jaan’, is a remake of the 2014 Tamil movie, ‘Veeram’. Veeram is a 2014 Tamil film, starring Ajith Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead. Along with Salman, the remake also stars Venkatesh Daggubati, Jagapathi Babu, and Pooja Hegde
