As the entire world is currently the novel coronavirus, many countries across the globe are struggling with a shortage of masks and sanitizers. Be it the developed countries like the USA or developing countries like ours, the shortage is quite evident.
In the midst of these tough times, other than doctors and nurses, some real heroes are coming forward to help those in need. One such story that captured the attention of many netizens was of this 98-year-old Gurdev Kaur Dhaliwal. She is working relentlessly to make masks for those in need.
Neither her age nor her blurry vision could stop 98-year-old Gurdev Kaur Dhaliwal from Punjab’s Moga from stitching masks for the poor. Every day, this inspiring real hero wakes up early in the morning to stitch masks from 8 am to 4 pm for those who can’t afford it.

Recently, calling her the “strongest corona warrior” of Punjab, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh lauded her efforts. He tweeted with the caption:
“The strongest Corona Warrior of Punjab is 98-year-old Gurdev Kaur from Moga who with her family is stitching masks for Punjab. Such selfless dedication of Punjabis is proof of how strong we are & that we will overcome any challenge which comes our way,”

What makes it even more inspiring is the fact that even though Dhaliwal has a blurry vision in one eye, it doesn’t stop her from making masks every day.

In her noble cause of saving lives, Gurdev is not alone. She is supported by her daughters-in-law and grandchildren as well. Amarjit Kaur, Dhaliwal’s daughter-in-law was quoted as saying by NDTV:
“Several vegetable sellers in our area were not wearing masks. We told them to wear it to protect themselves from the coronavirus but they said they could not afford it. Then we decided to stitch masks and give it to them free of cost,”
The Punjab government has made wearing masks mandatory in the state.

As per sources, these cotton masks aren’t a substitute for N95 respirators.— tightly fitted devices that filter out 95 percent of airborne particles. These marks are not even as effective as surgical masks. But in the need of the hour, when the country is encountering a shortage in N95 and surgical masks, a handmade cotton mask is indeed the best option to stop the virus from spreading among the public.
