It’s extremely difficult to find words that could do justice to the heroism of the mother’s love. Vaidehi Ankolekar’s story is a real-life example of how mothers push themselves to give the best opportunity to their kids.
Full of sacrifice and pain, the mother’s love is so powerful that it can move mountains for her kids. One such single mother is Vaidehi Ankolekar, who fought all life challenges to make sure her son realizes his dreams.
While India will play against Bangladesh in the final today, there is one player – Atharva Ankolekar, who is not only playing just for runs and wickets but also for a better future that he has always promised his single mother in return for her hardships.
His mother Vaidehi Ankolekar, who works as a bus conductor with Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST), has raised Atharva and his younger brother alone after her husband passed away when the boy was nine. A club cricketer himself, his father was also a BEST bus conductor.

Realizing how important this particular match would be for her son, the Atharva’s mother Vaidehi shared with HT :
“It can be turning point of his life. If India wins this match, he will get a lot of future-scope, and confidence from winning a big final.”
She further shared with the Hindustan Times that he wants her to quit the job because the work is strenuous. Though it is a heart-touching gesture, sharing why she would still not give up on her job, Vaidehi mentioned:
“The final is an opportunity to fulfill Atharva’s father’s dreams. He wants me to quit working because my job is strenuous…. but I can’t take a hasty step. His income is based on tournaments he plays, it’s not fixed. Besides, I don’t want to depend completely on him. I also have a 14-year-old, who also plays cricket. I will continue with my job, at least till he becomes a stable cricketer.”
Because of her busy schedule, Vaidehi has hardly seen her son playing matches. But today, when India battle Bangladesh in the final in South Africa, Vaidehi will be skipping work to see her son chasing the dream that she has been part of since she was born.
At I FOR HER, we are in awe of Vaidehi’s undying spirit as she refused to give up on her circumstances. She left no stone unturned in making her son realize his dreams. Â
