IFORHER’s Women Empowerment Series capture true stories of real people who are inspiring women to break stereotypes. Tea vendor Surinder Kumar gave the best possible support to her daughter, who made everyone proud by becoming a Judge in the same court.
Daughters are truly priceless!
Though society may be unfair to the daughters, some daughters are leaving no stone unturned to make their parents proud. They are showing the society that they are not less than anyone.
One such daughter is Shruti, who fought against her life circumstances to make her parents proud.
Shruti’s father, Surinder Kumar, who used to sell tea inside the court complex of the sub-divisional magistrate in Jalandhar, never believed that her daughter could take the position of the Judge in the very same court.
Being a resident of a small town of Punjab, Surinder has worked as a tea seller all his life. But, he made sure he supported his daughter to reach new heights.
So when his daughter Shruti, in 2015, passed the Punjab Civil Services (Judicial) Examination in the first attempt and topped in the SC category, he couldn’t believe it.
After finishing her training at the judicial academy, she joined as a judge. She completed her graduation from Guru Nanak Dev University and went on to study law from Punjab University. During her interview with Deccan Herald, she shared:
“I always wanted to be associated with the legal profession. I wanted to be a judge. And, I sat for the examination and stood first in the SC category”
Though many people celebrated Shruti achievement, there are very few fathers like Surinder who believe in their daughter’s potential.

While Surinder always knew that his daughter would achieve something remarkable in her life, he had never thought that she would get such a respectable position at the same place where he had been selling tea for many years now.
At IFORHER, we salute Surinder’s courage & support and hope more parents will believe in their daughters. We need to give our girls a fair chance to build a life of dignity and love.
