One such real hero who recently set an example of heroism for the rest of mankind is Gauri Behera.
Recently, life took an ugly turn for Gauri Behera, a single mom, who is a guard at Pipili police station in Puri district, Odisha. While she was performing her lockdown duty on April 24, she received the tragic news of her teenage daughter’s death.
Her teenage daughter was just 13 and had been fighting against liver cancer for almost a year.
Losing a child is never easy. And while every parent needs a lifetime to overcome the grief of losing a child, this brave Coronawarrior prioritized joining her Covid-19 duty just two days after her daughter’s death.
Gauri’s sacrifice and call for duty have made her a lockdown hero before Odisha’s chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who took to Twitter to praise her and expressed condolence on her daughter’s death.
“She is an inspiration for others. Despite in grief over her 13-year-old daughter’s death, she did not discontinue her duty. Her sacrifice is highly praiseworthy.”

Gauri shared how her daughter Lopamudra was suffering from liver cancer for the past one year. While Gauri was on lockdown duty on the street, her daughter was at home battling cancer struggle. On April 24, this single mother received a phone call about her daughter’s worsening health condition around 8 pm.
“I rushed home in my bicycle. By the time I reached home from police station, which is around 3 km, my daughter was no more. My world came crashing down.”
Gauri said she joined duty on April 26, two days after the tragic incident.
What would make you salute this real hero is the fact while her husband left her several years ago, she was working really hard to make sure her family leads a life of dignity. While opening up about her struggle, and help from the government, she mentioned:
“My husband ditched me several years ago. I am staying with my ailing parents and a mentally-retarded younger brother. I have to work to earn our livelihood. I urge the government to provide me financial help,”
At IFORHER, we are extremely sorry for this inspiring single mom’s heartbreaking loss. While we are in awe of her courage and determination, we hope authorities would come forward and offer some assistance to take off some burden from this griefing heroic mother.
