We live in a society that keeps obsessing over women getting married. As soon as a woman crosses certain age, all the uncles and aunties start getting worried about her marriage. Doesn’t matter how successful and famous we are, we are only considered settled if we are married.
While many succumb to the pressure of getting married, there are few who are standing against the societal pressure to lead a life on their own terms. One such inspiring soul is the actor, Prachi Desai. Prachi, who has given powerful performances in Bollywood movies like ‘Rock On!!’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’, has a very powerful message on marriage.
Prachi Desai, 32 years old, recently spoke about how she loves her independence too much to give it up for marriage. She also mentioned that she is in no hurry to get married. She would prefer to be late, than sorry.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, the ‘Kasam Se’ actor said:
“My parents have brought me up in such a way that I never saw marriage as a safety net or as something I would do if my career slowed down for a bit or something didn’t work out.”
She added:
“You know, I have been married so many times on screen that I think I am done with it for now. Whoever the guy is for me, he better be prepared. I live on my terms and I love my independence too much to give it up for marriage right now. I won’t mind being married a few years later but again, only if and when someone perfect comes along.”
In a different interview, she shared how even her parents respect her space and never pressurize her to get married.
“My parents have always respected my space and never spoken about marriage or finding a guy. When my friends actually tell me that their parents are bringing up the topic at home, I find it a little surprising and odd because my parents never do that.”
At IFORHER, we hope many parents will seek inspiration from Prachi’s parents and won’t force their daughters to be married. Like Prachi, many inspiring women are shattering the social norm about marriageable age. They are showing the world that the right age to be married is when you are ready!
