Since time immemorial, our society has been shaming daughters-in-law whenever they stand for themselves. Rather than giving them due respect, our society blames them for being devoid of family values or for not respecting their elders, or for breaking homes. Society calls them liars, evil, and home-wreckers!
And, when Simi Garewal denounced Meghan Markle after her bombshell interview with Oprah and her husband Prince Harry, we couldn’t resist the resemblance of patriarchy that many daughters-in-law often face when they stand for themselves.
While sharing her opinion, Simi was quick to call Meghan Markle a liar and said she finds it difficult to believe anything said in this interview.
On Twitter, Simi Garewal wrote,
“I don’t believe a word Meghan says. Not a word. She is lying to make herself a victim. She is using the race card to gain sympathy. Evil.”
#OprahMeghanHarry I don’t believe a word Meghan says. Not a word. She is lying to make herself a victim. She is using the race card to gain sympathy. Evil.

It was heartbreaking how Simi showed a lack of empathy for the couple. But, what was even more disappointing was the fact that she quickly judged Meghan and labeled her evil. Even though in the same interview, Prince Harry also spoke about how the royal family ill-treated his wife and his child. But Simi chooses only to target Meghan and not a single word for Prince Harry.
Isn’t it what our patriarchal society always does? Blame the woman; Curse the woman; Criticize the woman! Just don’t say a word against the man!
But it wasn’t only us who were disgusted by Simi’s hurtful comments. Many netizens came forward to share their disappointment with the tweet.

Madam, if you can’t believe that the Royal Family is racist, you need to go & read some colonial history!

After what the Royal family did to Lady Diana, there is enough reason to believe Meghan. Frankly, it is not at all surprising. Infact, it is so difficult to understand this whole Royal family concept in the present times. However, Meghan is definitely very smart and brave.

& Who are u Simi to decide that anyways???
How dare u call Meghan’s side of the story lies & call her evil!?
How absolutely vindictive, insensitive & cruel!
Were u there to see it all???
ur judgement towards Meghan is EVIL
Shame on u
After backlash, in a later tweet, Simi admitted that using the word ‘evil’ was ‘excessive’.
I withdraw the word ‘evil’. It was excessive. Calculating would have been more appropriate…

But, that wasn’t enough. Simi Garewal further ranted about how she doesn’t like women who break homes and families that take years to build.
“There are too many facts…for a starter try reading this. And I do not respect women who come in and break up homes. Families & marriages take years to build trust,” Simi wrote, replying to a Twitter user who said that Meghan’s interview was a ‘massively risky move with no apparent benefit’.

Again, she targeted only Meghan and not a single word for Harry. Doesn’t it resemble how our patriarchal society blames a woman for breaking families when she stands for her dignity against abusive in-laws!
