Today’s media and society overall have put unimaginable pressure on women around the world to look beautiful. We are expected to have a fit body, clear skin, perfect posture, silky hair, and stylish fashion sense.
For most women around the world, those things are not possible, and they still struggle to somehow fit society’s standard of beauty.
However, some women are defying these rules. And, Chiara Bordi is definitely one of those.
Chiara Bordi, 18, lost her leg in a bike accident when she was 13. But, she did not let her injury dictate her life or her dreams.
Chiara was the first contestant with a prosthetic leg to compete in the finals of Miss Italia.
However, the final was accompanied by insults she received online over her disability.
Some trollers even abused her by saying she was only in the contest because she’s ‘crippled’.
Responding to the insults on Facebook, Chiara said:
“I’m missing a leg, but you’re missing a heart and brain. There are all sorts of frustrations and dissatisfactions behind this nastiness. I’m not interested in winning, but showing the world that life is still beautiful when reborn after a dramatic event.”
She proudly displayed her prosthetic leg during the beauty pageant while she competed in the swimsuit and evening-wear rounds.
She describes herself as a traveler and sportswoman, who enjoys canoeing, rollerblading, windsurfing, climbing rock walls and diving. And, would like to study to become an orthopedic surgeon.
Even though Chiara narrowly lost out on the Miss Italy title and stood 3rd, we want to thank her for inspiring us to stand against societal beauty norms.
