IAS officer Kinjal Singh’s inspiring story of how she battled for 31 years to seek justice for her father’s murder.
Inspiring Story Of IAS Officer Kinjal Singh
No one can deny how fake encounters are an ugly reality in many parts of our country. Many times, these fake encounters result in the death of innocent people to hide the real culprits. And, these encounters are very well covered by the team to ensure the truth never comes out.
One such fake encounter happened almost 38 years ago in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh. In this encounter, 13 people died or murdered on the same day. One of these 13 people was the Deputy Superintendent of Police, KP Singh. After the death of KP Singh, his wife was determined to get justice for her husband. And, it was this determination that pushed KP Singh’s daughter Kinjal Singh to do everything she could to put her father’s murderers behind bars.
But her road to seeking justice was anything but easy.
At an age, when other kids will happily spend time at a playground, Kinjal, along with her mother, Vibha, would travel to the Supreme Court in Delhi from a small town in Uttar Pradesh. The strong-willed and determined single mother, Vibha got a job in a Varanasi treasury. While being on a quest to seek justice for her husband, she supported both her daughters’ education.
In between her routine travel from her home in Uttar Pradesh to Supreme Court in Delhi, Kinjal studied really hard. She managed to get admission into Delhi’s esteemed Lady Shri Ram College. But, then life took another ugly turn. Kinjal’s mother, Vibha, got diagnosed with cancer. And, the news almost devastated the daughters, who had already lost their father. After a difficult battle with her disease, Vibha died with a hope that both her daughters will become IAS officers to get justice for their father’s death.

After her mother’s death, Kinjal soon returned back to college to give her final exams. After her graduation, she also brought along her younger sister, Pranjal Singh, to Delhi. It was then, both started preparing for the UPSC exam. In 2007, both Kinjal (25th rank) and Pranjal (252nd rank) cleared the UPSC examination.
DSP KP Singh’s dream was to become an IAS officer but it was his daughters, who fulfilled that dream. After clearing the exam, Kinjal and her sister Pranjal focused every bit of their energy to get their father’s killers behind the bars.
It was quite inspiring how their strong determination shook the entire justice system and eventually they got justice.
In 2013, after 31 years of their struggle, the CBI special court in Lucknow penalized all the 18 perpetrators behind their father DSP Singh’s murder. DSP KP Singh was killed by his colleagues in a fake encounter as they dreaded that their corrupt actions might be exposed by the honest DSP Singh. Saroj, who had many pending bribery and corruption cases against him — along with others, lured Singh to Madhavpur on the pretext of criminal movements in that area.Â

When they reached the place where the two criminals were supposedly hiding, Saroj shot Singh on his chest. Singh was pronounced dead on reaching the hospital. Along with Singh, 12 other villagers were also killed in this fake encounter.Â
Kinjal, while talking to Times of India about her parents, said,
I am proud of my father who was an honest officer and my mother who proved to be a strong single parent and a stronger widow who stood up against the injustice done to her husband.
On getting justice for her father, Kinjal told Times of India,
I was barely two and a half-months old when my father was murdered. I have no memories of him. But I remember how my mother Vibha continued her struggle for justice despite all odds till she succumbed to cancer in 2004. Had she been alive today, I am sure she would have lived the moment.
