In times, when social media is swamped with young fitness influencers, there is this 81-year-old woman, Usha Soman, who gives us major fitness motivation. Be it about push-ups or hiking or skipping or running, Milind Soman’s mother Usha has left everyone motivated.
We live in a country where for many women, family members’ health takes precedence over their own health. This it is important to have a role model who inspires women to take up fitness, irrespective of age.
Usha’sinspiring fitness journey started at the age of 60. She had just retired as a professor of biochemistry and was ready to pick up another challenge. It was then she took the leap and started trekking.
Now after almost 2 decades, Usha has become an inspiration not only for people in fitness but also for those who appreciate a healthier and happier life.
Last year, Milind shared a video on his Instagram where his “80 years young” mother Usha Soman left most women jaw dropped by doing not one, but 16 push-ups in one go. In the video shared on mother’s day, one could see the supermodel and fitness icon, Milind Soman doing push-ups alongside his saree-clad mother on the ground.
But, that’s not the only time when Usha Soman has made us believe that age is just the number.
A couple of weeks ago, Milind posted a video of his mom and his wife hopping on one leg with the caption:
“28 and 81! Be fit at every age.”
Usha Soman was effortlessly winning the race and our hearts.
And now in the recent video shared by Milind Soman, he is seen skipping with 81-year old mom, Usha. In a motivational caption Milind further said:
“You are old only when you think you are.”

But it is not only us, who seeks fitness inspiration from Usha Soman. Even Milind Soman believes he has learned his fitness mantra from her. In his interview with Vogue, Milind Soman mentioned how his mother inspired his own fitness journey:
“My mom works very hard and does what she wants to, but never complains. Last year, we went to hike 350km for 20 days. She was really fast, much faster than I was myself,” he says. “And even if she has a problem in climbing steep hills, she doesn’t admit it. She keeps going.” Is that something the actor has learnt from her? “I don’t know if she has a fitness mantra, but mine is to keep moving and never give up. I think I’ve taken it from her because that’s how she is.”
Sharing about Usha’s immense mental strength, Milind further adds,
“She didn’t tell us any of them. She just got to it and kept moving forward. She is a private person and doesn’t talk much about herself. I might have got into fitness very early on in my life as compared to her, but her mental strength will still beat mine,”.
