In a Bollywood realm where relationships are often in the spotlight, Hema Malini, an iconic figure in the industry, has shed light on her unique living arrangement with her husband, Dharmendra. While their love story has stood the test of time, they choose to reside in separate households due to their unconventional circumstances.
In a recent interview, Hema expressed her contentment and emphasized that despite the unconventional nature of their relationship, she harbors no resentment.
The Tale of Hema and Dharmendra
Having tied the knot in 1980, Hema Malini and Dharmendra have forged a lasting bond that defies societal norms. However, it’s important to note that Dharmendra had a preexisting marriage and family prior to his union with Hema. With Hema, he shares two daughters – Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. Hema, on the other hand, lived with her daughters before marrying Dharmendra, solidifying their bond as a family.
Hema’s Perspective on Living Separately
Addressing her atypical living arrangement, Hema responded to an interviewer’s query regarding her status as a feminist icon due to her independence. She responded with a warm smile, stating, “A symbol of feminism? (laughs). Nobody desires such a situation, but sometimes life takes unexpected turns. We must learn to accept these circumstances. Every woman aspires to have a husband and children, a typical family life. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way.”

Embracing Her Journey
Hema Malini firmly asserts that she holds no resentment or sadness about their separate living situation. She finds contentment in herself and takes pride in raising her two children independently. She acknowledges Dharmendra’s constant presence and concern, revealing his anxiousness for their daughters’ marriages. Hema calmly assured him that when the time is right, destiny will bring the perfect companions into their daughters’ lives. With divine blessings and the guidance of spiritual mentors, everything eventually fell into place.
Talking about how she has taken life in a stride, Hema mentioned: “I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well. Of course, he (Dharmendra) was there, always. Everywhere. Actually, he was the one worried, ‘Shaadi hona chaiye bachchon ka jaldi’ (The kids should get married early). I said ‘Hoga’ (It’ll happen). When the time is right, the right person will come around. With the blessings of god and guru ma, everything happened”.
The Dynamics of Dharmendra and Hema’s Relationship
Dharmendra’s life took a significant turn when he crossed paths with Hema Malini. Prior to their union, he was married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and two daughters, Ajeeta and Vijeta. Together with Hema, Dharmendra shares two daughters – Esha and Ahana. Their blended family exhibits the unique tapestry of love, commitment, and understanding that defies societal norms.
Celebrating Love in Different Ways
Recently, Dharmendra’s grandson, Karan Deol, tied the knot in a grand ceremony, marking a joyous occasion for the family. However, Hema, along with her daughters Esha and Ahana, chose not to attend the festivities. Nonetheless, Dharmendra took to social media to express his profound emotions for his beloved wife and daughters, emphasizing the unwavering bond they share.
Hema Malini’s journey stands as a testament to the fact that relationships don’t always adhere to societal expectations. Despite living separately from her husband, she radiates happiness and pride in her accomplishments as a mother. Her story serves as an inspiration for individuals navigating unconventional paths, showcasing that personal fulfillment can be achieved regardless of societal norms. As Hema Malini continues to carve her path in Bollywood, she remains an emblem of strength, resilience, and independence.
